Nathanael is also listed with the disciples at Jesus' Galilean appearances.

Nothing is known of Barth. in the new testament only his name is given.
Assuming he was Nathanael, John gives some insight to his character.

45. Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.
Due to his own indication of his knowledge of Bible prophecy, we can assume he gave much time to Scriptural study.
46. And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.
48. Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.
By his position when Philip found him, we can assume he gave much time to meditation and prayer.
The fig tree was known as a private place for this.

Fig trees were usually found by the entrances of homes, and their low hanging branches provided both shade and privacy for this endeavor.
John 1:47
47. Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!
Jesus' own testimony to his character, "no guile" or deceit, or evil intention to him whatsoever.
Some believe him to be the unnamed disciple on the road to Emmaus.
Lk.24:13
- And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which
was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs.
Because of the comparison of John 1:51 and Acts 7:56 some call him Stephen.
Jn.1:51
- And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see
heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of
man.
Acts 7:56
- And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the
right hand of God.
As you can see there is a great deal of similarity in those two verses.
All of this of course is mere speculation.
