31.07.2001 And another Wilbur Smith, "Dark of the Sun" - the usual yarn, I am pretty sure I have seen this as a movie! Relatively short, something for in between. Not too spectacular. 27.07.2001 Holiday reading and further.... Matthew Reilly, "Temple" - give me a break, this is one of the most unbelievable adventure stories I have ever read! Not even James Bond could pull off all these stunts this guy is going through in order to save the world!!! Totally ridiculous! But what a great read! Suspend believe and go for a rollercoaster ride! You won't be bored, the action just keeps coming on every single page! Matt Dickinson, "High risk" - great, I loved it! Could not put it down, was through in 2 days. Great adventure story, from an avalanche in Alaska all the way to the top of Mount Everest. Believable, thrilling, really good read! Gregory Benford, "Cosm" - one of my favourite Sci-Fi writers. The real world of science and what can happen if you stumble over the most significant break-through in physics during one of your experiments.... Stuart Harrison, "Still Water" - Someone gets killed, the hero is in love with the main murder suspect and tries to prove her innocence. Quite good, if you can live with the plot-twist at the end. I did not like it and thought it was stupid, it spoilt all my fun. Stephen King, "Insomnia" - King at his best, great characterisations and weird things happening all around..... Tom Clancy, "Excecutive Orders" - ideal for the beach, 1300 pages. The usual Clancy, lots of techno-babble, soldiers saving the world, gizmos, conspiracies, Jack Ryan in trouble, this time as the American president... If you like Clancy, it's a good read. William Dalrymple, "From the holy mountain" - like I already said in June, excellent book, it even was really useful for my holidays in Greece, as all the Byzantine art in the various museums actually meant something to me. ...what do you mean, 3 links to the same provider aren't enough!!? :-) |
My all-time favourites... Some dazzling scenery, adventure, heaving bossoms, surprising plot-twists, suspense, good-looking heroes, really mean bad guys, conspiracies and all that after 8 hours at work and low brainpower? Fear not, Wilbur Smith will keep you entertained for hours! Or perhaps some crime busting in ancient Rome? Try Lindsey Davis' hero Marcus Didius Falco, always good for a chuckle and you won't figure out who's dunnit until the very last page. More classic crime? Sorry, Agatha, but you are boring the pants off me! Try some Dorothy Sayers instead, "Gaudy Night" is one of my favourites..... A bit more up-tp-date version? Elizabeth George is American, but you would never guess, true British crime novels.... Stephen King - not only horror, but some genuinely good story telling, too! Not enough horror? Try Dean Koontz..... Oh, by the way, a neat mixture between Wilbur and the above two: Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child. With every single installment I was up all night, absolutely impossible to put down! Try "Riptide"! |
