Randy in Wicked - July 2004

On Saturday, July 3, 2004, and Saturday, July 17, 2004, I traveled to New York, to the Gershwin Theater, to see an amazing musical, Wicked. I knew very little about it before I saw it the first time, other than the fact that Randy Harrison was appearing in a supporting role for 5 weeks, his Broadway debut. In the next several days, I promise to write down my thoughts about the show, as well as our short encounter with Randy on July 17. In the meantime, I'm posting some photos we took of Randy outside the theater and some more of the curtain call.

My daughter and I waited by the stage door and watched most of the cast arrive for the matinee. Almost without exception, they were wonderful. They posed for photos and signed autographs for just about everyone who asked. Time constraints prevented the two stars, Kristen Chenowith and Idina Mensel from satisfying everyone's wishes, but their fans loved them anyway. At around 1:20 or so, we spotted Randy strolling down 51st Street toward us. He had his ubiquitous headphones on and his head bounced slightly, along with the music he was listening to. As we walked toward him, he removed the head phones and smiled at us. We had a short conversation before he moved down the street to pose and sign for more of his fans. The applause was loud and exuberant, both during the performance and afterwards. We turned off the flash on our cameras and took several photos of the curtain call.
