"Happy Birthday"
By Cathy Roberts

It was dark.  So very dark.  He slowly turned, afraid that
he would lose his balance in the darkness.  Afraid that he
would fall or become hopelessly lost in this place that had
no up or down, or left or right.  He tried to remember how
he came to this place, but he couldn't.  It seemed that
he would fall asleep and wake up to this.  This total
darkness.  He reminded himself that every time this had
happened, he would see a light, and by following that light,
he would leave the darkness.  All he had to do was wait and
the light would be there.

He strained his ears, trying to seek out the throbbing sound
that accompanied the darkness.  It seemed faint this time,
but was growing stronger.  So very stronger.  Maybe he was
hearing his own heartbeat?  He reached out, grasping for
something tangible.  Looking for anything that would tell
him where this place was.  Sometimes he would find something,
but he was never able to hold onto it for a long time.  He
heard a soft laugh -- it sounded melodic and somehow reassuring.
It reminded him of his mother.  Not that he had very many
memories of her.  She had either died or deserted him when
he was still a babe.  But, there were times when he thought
he remembered her.  Remembered her smile and her laughter
and her love.

Mother.

He had always wanted a mother.  A real mother and not just
someone who watched over him.  Guiding him and teaching him
but never giving him the love that a mother has for her
child.  He felt tired and let sleep take him.  Maybe when
he awoke the light would be there and he could escape from
this place again.  What wrong had he done that made him
deserve this fate?

There!  He could see the light just in front of him.  If he
struggled, he could break through the nebulous curtain that
was straining to keep him trapped here.  With a cry he broke
through, the light so bright that it blinded him.  Not that
it mattered.  The blindness would pass, just as the cold
would.  Now that he was in the light he could once more
search for his one true love.  The woman who was the other
half of his soul.  He could picture her now -- brown eyes,
blonde hair.  Vivacious spirit.  His betrothed.  And this
time, Gwen would not be torn from him.  This time, he would
find her and hold onto her.  Deep in his heart he knew that
if he managed to do just that, then there would be no more
darkness.  No more loneliness.

Guenevere!  I'm here.  I will find you and watch over you, I
promise.  I am your champion and I won't leave you this time.

The doctor smiled as he handed the wailing infant to the
exhausted woman.  Her husband looked on, acting as if this
was their first child and not their second.

"Mr. and Mrs. Carter, allow me to present your son."

The End.
