The novel's subject is about an affair between a middle-aged pervert and a twelve-year-old girl, make it a controvercial piece. Mr. Nabokov is a Russian emigrant, working with his second tongue, still has few living equals as a virtuoso in the handling of the English language.

The story begins from a confession of Mr. Humbert, Lolita is the daughter of his landlady. When he saw Lolita in the first sight, he decided to live in and marry Mrs. Haze, his landlady. But one day Mrs. Haze found out Humbert was using her, she ran out and got killed by a car accident. Then, Humbert immediately carried Lolita to begin their motel-hopping trek across the American continent. Their weird affair is climaxed by Lolita's escape with a playwright and Humbert's eventually revenge with his rival.
