          Rundle, a Valentine fairy
                 (or a blessing angel!)

  Cathy J. Montgomery-Jan. 2002

Supplies:
fiberfill; scraps of muslin; red & white felt pieces; red netting; various sizes lace; red & white ribbon; fabric glue (I like Beacon Fabri-Tac);  black micron pen or other fine tipped permanent marker, gel pens & colored pencils; white-out; embellishments--hearts, small ribbon rose, etc.; small pieces of wire or stamens from artificial flowers for antennae; yarn, etc. for hair.
                                         Please read instructions first!

Instructions:

seam allowances are 1/4 inch

1.    Cut out head/body pattern from muslin scrap;  cut out the large hearts from red felt
and the small heart from white felt.  (Of course--
all these are suggestions! There's such a
wide variety of material & color schemes to choose from!)

2.    Sew the head/body pieces together, leaving the bottom open between the marks.  Carefully
clip the curves and cut away any excess fabric that you can. Turn Rundle inside out.
Pencil in the facial features if you haven't done it already.

3.     Stuff the head.  The body should be lightly stuffed to allow it to be inserted into the
large heart later.  Glue or sew up Rundle's bottom now.

4.     Draw over the penciled facial features with the black micron pen (or the marker), except
for the eyelashes.  Fill in her pupils.  Use the colored pencils in your chosen shades for
her eyeshadow and blush.  (Some use real eyeshadow and blush makeup for their doll
faces)  Color her lips with a red or pink gel pen.  Now do the eyelashes with the micron
pen.  Use  the white-out to dab just a dot of white to her pupils to show  reflected light.
(Or use a toothpick to dab a bit of white acrylic paint--whatever you've got handy!)

5.    Add her hair now.   If you're using yarn, make little loops of it and glue all over her head,
framing her facial features.  (For curly yarn,  first wrap yarn around a knitting needle
or wooden skewer, dampen the yarn and let it dry overnight.  Then glue that on Rundle!)

6.    Unless you want something like Sophi who is placed on the outside of the heart--don't
worry about dressing Rundle--she'll be perfectly fine wearing nothing!

7.    Now for the large top heart--sew a length of lace around it.  (Either on topside or
       bottomside, it's your choice!)

8.    Sew the hearts together,  be sure  leave the top open between the marks for  Rundle
       to slip in later.

9.    Take the one small felt heart now and glue a bit of red lace to cover it.  Cut away
any extra lace after that's dried..

10.  Dab glue along the edges of the heart pocket.   Make sure you don't glue past the marks
at the top of the pocket or its middle either.  Remember--it's a pocket for little notes of
love or encouragement!  Apply pressure to it on the front of the big heart!  Let it dry.

11.  Insert Rundle now into the heart and glue her in!  Let her dry.

12.  Embellish her & the heart with ribbons, little hearts, roses, etc.--have some fun!

13.  Glue her antennae to the back of her head--if she's not an angel, that is!  Cover the ends
with a bit of extra hair.

14.   Scrunch up the red netting in the middle  and glue to her back.  Or use lace or a bow
for her wings--or whatever your creative mind devises!  (
Who knows what creativity
       lurks in a dollmaker's heart???!!
)

15.  Put a pin on her back--sewing might be better than gluing here!  Don't want Rundle to
either be a fairy that falls
or a fallen angel, now do we??  (Another idea is to attach a cord
to Rundle's back to make her a neck ornament!)

Now, go forth and multiply Rundle!  Pleasantly surprise someone with a note
of love or encouragement in the little heart pocket--bless their socks off!!

If you send me pictures of your completed Valentine fairy or angel, I'll post them
to the site!   Just make sure the pictures are jpg or gif files!   Thanks!   CJM
