Squirt Palmer

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When we were on our trip the summer of 1998, we ran across a lady down in Ocala Florida that had some different, shall I say, type birds than we have ever had. She called them "green cheek conures" ... you know we had to have one!!! So, Chuck said he would buy it for Joseph. Everyone was thrilled.
After making the purchase of bird, cage, toys, play gym and feed we got back in the van and went on to Pensacola. When we get there we go on to our motel room to check in and then headed over to the island for dinner. There is this terrific place there called "Flounders" and we try to eat there every time we go. We took the birds into the motel, made them what we thought to be comfortable and then headed out for the evening.
After dinner, a round of putt putt golf and visiting with friends we headed back to the motel room for some much needed rest. We were all whooped after that long drive and ride. Out go the lights and then he started. SCREAMMMMMMMMMMMMMM ... Chuck turned the light back on right away and the scream stopped. We all said at about same time, what in the world was that!?!?!?! Well, was the new green cheek conure. We talked to him and told him it was nite nite time and to go to sleep. Out go the lights .... SCREAMMMMMMMMMMMMM ... On go the lights. That night Squirt got to sleep in the bathroom with the lights on!!! The bird was actually scared of the dark. The next night we didn't even bother to go thru the process of lights on lights off. In to the bathroom Squirt went. This time we covered his cage. He slept peacefully. And so did we.
* smile *
On our outings during that weekend we ran across a big ole cage for Squirt. Much larger than the one we got from the lady that sold him to us. So we get this cage and have to go out and get some bungee cords. Strapped him to the middle seat of the van. The cage is tall as well and we sure could not have a scared of the dark conure falling to the floor of the van in case of an emergency stop.
Thru the weeks, Squirt became accustomed to the dark. The first few weeks in his new home he resided in the kitchen with the over the stove light on. He finally got to where he was ready for a good nights sleep himself and has been living in the bird room, where he is The Master Of The Game over all the others. He gets out of his cage every day when I get in from work for several hours. He walks all over most of the cages. There are some of the birds that do not care for him too much so they scurry him away. But there are some of the birds that love him and glad to have a visit. Sometimes he even gets to sit in the kitchen on his settee whilst we are having dinner.
Squirt loves eating fruits and veggies and one day may get a mate. Right now his main objective in life is to rule the Palmer family and the Palmer family bird room. Something he does quiet well.
