Confronting the Devils
Chapter Five

" Dr Natsume to the emergency room." The dull monotonous voice said over the pa system.

He shot up from the slouching position he had eventually adopted in the empty consultation room and head for the door in a blink of an eye. As he walked briskly towards his destination, he purged all his personal thoughts from his mind, mentally preparing himself for the work before him.

Yet, when he pushed apart the heavy door leading to the one room in the hospital that is always noisy and bustling with activities, he fell onto the floor in a dead faint. A passing intern caught hold of him and saved him from possible concussion. Everyone in the room turned to glance briefly but no one offer to help. Fainting doctors have no significant positions in their minds.

Almost immediately he regained full consciousness and sat up feeling rather embarassed. Waving aside the intern's offer of help, he pushed himself off the floor tediously and stood still for a moment on his shaky legs. He could feel the dizziness ebbing at him.

" Give me a hand." He finally relented and grabbed hold of the shivering intern's shoulder for support. Shoving him slightly, he made his way to the nurse station. The nurse matron rattled off the critical cases to be assigned under him without a slight show of sympathy for his ashen face.

After her rather long but informative narrative, he nudges his helping hand' towards the assigned treatment room.

The younger nurses were more sympathetic when they saw him stagger in but all refrained from saying anything as he began emergency treatment for the victim of a car crash. He worked furiously in silence and his dizziness seem to have gone away, leaving him with his full faculties to perform what is required of him.

When he staggers tiredly out of the room again pulling of his protective clothing carelessly, the dizziness came back to haunt him. Before he can grab something for support, his legs gave way and he slumped unceremoniously onto the cold hard floor, his vision totally blank out. For a while he floated rather blissfully between nauseating subconsciousness then someone shook his arm and tapped both his cheeks and his light fluffy world disappears.

Painfully he forced open his eyes and his heart nearly stop beating. Four by now familiar faces crowded into his blurry vision but each held a different expression. The one closest to him is studying him anxiously, another one slightly further is badly bruised, another two standing furthest away are eyeing him from the corner of their eyes with cold indifference written on their faces.
