Once upon a time, there was a boy and a girl. One evening the girl left school real early and ran as fast as she can. She ran all the way to the street corner and stood there patiently waiting. Soon, a bunch of 4 rowdy boys came walking towards her. They shoved each other playfully and talked loudly to attract her attention but she ignored them, stretching her neck to look behind them. " He'll be here soon!" They teased her and continued on their way. For a long time, the din they created lingered in the air after them. It's cold ~ The girl shivered and blew at her frozen fingers. The sound of gravel crunching under someone's feet reached her as it approached. She turned wide-eyed with anticipation. A youth, painfully thin with a head of unruly curls is walking towards her. It's him, at last! " Good morning!" She cried out excitedly. His head, dipped down in his own thoughts shot up in surprise. His eyes always gleaming with swirly intensity looked straight into her own eyes, boring two deep holes in her soul. Unconsciously, she swallowed deeply. " Good morning ~" He replied with uncertainty. " It's really cold and dark today, what are you doing out here so late?" He asked deadpan. " I was waiting for you." She replied with a secretive smile. " Why?" He asked with a boy's bruquesness. " I want to give you something." She said still smiling her little smile. " Please stretch out your hand ~" He stretched out his hand obediently towards her and strained his eyes to see as she reached into her bag and pull out something in her clenched up fist. Calmly, she put it onto his palm. At first the tiny object was only a small black dot. Both he and the girl stared intently at it for some time. The boy began to shift impatiently when something magical happened. The tiny black dot began to glow. At first softly glow, it grew gradually into a fierce intensity. " Firefly ~" The boy gasped with delight. " It's beautiful!" He stared at the tiny glowing jewel in awe. The girl remained silent, still smiling. At last he looked up at her and smiled back into her eyes. " Is this for me?" The girl nodded. " Thank you ~" He blushed lightly. " It's your birthday today ~ Happy Birthday." The girl replied shyly and ran off before he could react. Many years later, the boy and the girl grew up into adults. One late afternoon they went for a stroll and came upon a forest thicket. The sky is almost hidden by a canopy of trees, here and there weak rays of the late autumn sun escaped and threw themselves upon the path. " Winter is coming soon ~" The girl remarked as she turned her head up towards the sun. " Yes it is." The boy agreed. " Did you have a good autumn? She asked abruptly. " Oh yes..." He replied with childish excitement and proceed to tell her all the delicious things he had tasted in the season almost passed. " They sound perfectly lovely." She agreed when he finished. " What about you?" He asks curiously. " I have something for you ~" She said instead. Slowing down to a complete stop, they turned to face each other. " Stretch out your hand." She requested. Hit by a familiar feeling of deja vu, he obliged. He watched in silence as she held up her hands, keeping them slightly apart as if holding up a small box-like object. She brings her hands over his stretched out palms and lowered the invisible object onto them. Then she retracts her hands and stare at him in anticipation. He looked back at her with silent confusion, his hands still raised, holding the invisible object. " I have given you a gift." She replied his searching glance. " It is formless and weightless in its orginal form." She continues. " You may mould it into any shape, any color, any size. Make for easy carrying." " Hmm..." He mutters thoughtfully as he lowers his eyes to look at the empty space on top of his palms. " I have put into it many many wishes for you..." " Health laced with the frozen dew drops of the Winter dawn." " Love gilded in the golden sunshine of Spring morning." " Freedom wrapped in the soft breeze of the Summer afternoon." " Happiness inlaid with the stars of Autumn Night." For an instant, he thought he could feel weight pressing down on his palms. His fingers curl up to form the shape of the box in his heart. " Happy 31th Birthday, Inagaki kun." |
