Sweetest Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in October. It started over 60 years ago in Cleveland, Ohio by one man believing that his city needed to show the orphans, shut-ins, aged and infirmed they were not forgotten. With the help of his neighbors, family and friends, he distributed small gifts to these people. Over the years, other Clevelanders began to participate in the occasion, calling it "Sweetest Day." Gradually the tradition spread to many of this country's major population areas.
As the tradition spreads out from the cities, it is still a day to make someone happy. It gives all of us the opportunity to tell those that are important to us how much we love, care for, and appreciate them. This holiday is not based on any family ties, nor on any religious beliefs. |
