The Birmingham Ledger "Good Roads Scouters"

on the Birmingham to Decatur division of the

Tennessee to the Gulf highway.

In August 1911 the Birmingham Ledger helped promote a scouting trip to find proposed routes from Tennessee to the Gulf of Mexico for automobiles. My grandmother, Eleanor Lucille Nix, and her fiancé, Oscar Virgil Hunt, participated in the Birmingham-to-Decatur division of the trip. Hunt was a daredevil photographer working for the Ledger and took these pictures along the way. Lucy and Oscar married April 15, 1913. She was 22 at the time of this trip.

The photos were made on a large format press camera and are of very good quality. Although these images have been reduced to load faster, some pictures may take a minute or so to come up in your browser, please be patient.
