The College Democrats of America (CDA) were originally
founded in 1932 to help the Presidential campaign of Franklin Roosevelt.
Throughout the 1940's to the 1960's, CDA was the largest student political
organization in the nation. However, in 1967 CDA broke ranks and opposed
the war in Vietnam. President Johnson cut off the funding and the organization
floundered nationally until the late 1980's. Inspired by the 1988 Presidential
candidacy of then-Senator Al Gore, the organization was revived. By the
1992 elections, with the Clinton/Gore ticket as the catalyst, CDA grew
to nearly 500 chapters with more than 50,000 members across the country.
Today CDA has expanded to over 800 chapters and more than 80,000 students
nationwide.
The College Democrats of Texas (CDT) were founded in 1992 when a group
of College Democrats gathered at Texas A&M University in College Station,
TX. After a weekend of learning, and meeting Texas Democrats, the
individual chapters united to become the College Democrats of Texas.
Since then, CDT has grown and expanded not only its membership but its influence. With the 1999 State Convention in Houston, a new generation of Democrats took the reigns of CDT under the direction of Holly Guynes of the University of Houston. This new era of leadership has been marked by a renewed focus on campaiging and lobbying, and a new feeling of coperation with the Texas Young Democrats.
Our logo is a red star encompassed by a blue star. It was designed by
Democratic activist Irene Rocha to symbolize the different views of Texas
Democrats - united in one Lone Star. The state motto of Texas is "Friendship."
The fat angles of the star hint at our love of good food and the conversation
enjoyed over a long weekend of volunteering and campaigning.
We have pushed hard for Democratic candidates at every level of government.
We are the idealists of this Party, we are the proud workhorse of this
Party, we are the future of this Party. Join us. We are excited about being
the College Democrats of Texas! |
