Who are the Celts?

The Keltoi were so named by the Greeks, signifying them as barbarian warriors. These ancient Celts were actually a tribal Iron Age people from Halstatt in Upper Austria.

Today the Celts' descendants are found in Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Isle of Mann, Cornwall, Brittany and Galicia - but also in Cape Breton, the Ottawa Valley, Chicago, Boston, Australia, Patagonia, Asturias. . .

What is 'Celtic'?

A common language, a common artistic style or maybe a common history or a common soul?

Modern Celts share a similar spirit of place and at the same time a similar spirit of displacement.

BACKGROUND

Celtic Women International, since its inception, has aspired to achieve a global community through sharing and support with a balance of intellectual and cultural pursuits. The organization was formed to honour, celebrate and promote Celtic women and their heritage. As well, we seek to promote understanding of diversity within the Celtic cultures through integrity, credibility and authenticity.

Our goal is to be a recognized leader in building an international community for Celtic women. We are in the process of establishing a sound financial base, expanding membership and increasing the activities of the organization both locally and internationally.

Celtic Women International was incorporated in June of 1997, and now has an international Board of Directors, with members from 5 States and 3 countries, including Canada and Ireland. The membership of the organization has representation from seven countries - including most of the areas of Celtic origin as well as the Celtic diaspora.

Since 1998 we have held successful annual conferences that have brought together participants and presenters from all over the world in celebration and sharing of their common culture. The scope of these conferences has ranged from serious educational pursuits to the forming of lasting friendships.

In 1999, an Exceptional Celtic Woman Award program was established. The award honours women who have achieved excellence in their field and have been instrumental in inspiring others. A prestigious group of Celtic scholars and artists make up a supportive group of honorary members who encourage us to respect and develop our Celtic heritage.

Celtic Women International publishes a quarterly newsletter for its members and has developed a comprehensive website. Celtic Women International has sought to form partnerships with existing Celtic cultural groups.
