Charles E. Burruss
Charles E. Burruss was the eldest son of Thomas Burruss and Knelly Bibb.  He had eleven brothers and sisters, the youngest three were half siblings.  Charles was born August 23, 1795 in Caroline County, Virginia.  Charles was a farmer, like his father Thomas.

On February 8, 1819 Charles married Lucy Cheadle Hargrave, the daughter of Samuel Hargrave, Jr and Lucy Terrell.  Lucy Cheadle was born May 30, 1798 in Caroline County. She was the second from the youngest of 10 children.  She descended from a very prominent Quaker family.  Her grandfather Samuel Hargrave, Sr. had been one of the founding members of the Quaker Meeting House in Caroline County.  Their families lived very close, and Charles and Lucy Cheadle likely grew up together.

Lucy and Charles had eight children.
Patrick Henry Burruss born Dec 11, 1820;
Mildred Ann Burruss born March 28, 1822;
Frances Eleanor Burruss born November 20, 1823;
Malvina Fleming Burruss born March 2, 1827;
Lucy Terrell Burruss born August 21, 1830;
Mary Rebecca Burruss born January 31, 1832;
Edmonia Agnes Burruss born June 18, 1834
Thomas Samuel G. Burruss born November 22, 1839.

A year after Thomas Samuel's birth, Lucy Cheadle died on November 4, 1840.  She was 42 years old.

After her death, times must have been difficult for Charles and his family.  No doubt the older daughters helped in the care of their younger siblings.  Like many families, they depended on the farm to supply their needs.    In 1850, ten years after his wife's death, seven of his eight children, were still at home with their father.  Mildred the oldest was 28, and the youngest, Thomas Samuel, was 11.  Only Patrick Henry who was working as a carpenter, had left home.

Charles E. Burruss died August 8, 1859.  He was 63.  His oldest son, Patrick Henry Burruss was executor and administrator of his estate.  At the time of the 1860 census, Thomas Samuel was listed as the head of the Burruss household.  His sisters Mildred, Frances, Lucy, Mary, and Edmonia were living in the family home.

The family home was located in the Ruther Glen District of Caroline County.  The families of Overton Burruss, Elliott W. Burruss, and James T. Burruss, all relatives, were neighbors.
