| Elizabeth J. Gunn was the only documented child of James Gunn, Jr. and Elizabeth Irby Jordan. Elizabeth was born in 1818 in Brunswick County, Virginia. From census records we know there were other children in the household but no records have been found to show who the parents of these children were. Elizabeth's parents did not appear on the 1840 Census. The next record that shows the whereabouts of Elizabeth J. Gunn was the 1850 Census of Brunswick County. Elizabeth age 33, was living in the household of Burwell Wilks. Burwell Wilks married Elizabeth "Betsey" Gunn in 1787. "Betsey" was the sister of Elizabeth J. Gunn's father, James Gunn, Jr. When "Betsey" Gunn Wilks died in 1846, she left her niece, Elizabeth J. Gunn fifty dollars in her Will. (see homepage for the will) Elizabeth J Gunn married Frederick Abernathy Lewis on November 5, 1861 in Brunswick County, Virginia. She was the third wife of Frederick A. Lewis. He had married Elizabeth Moss and then Almira Kelly prior to his marriage to Elizabeth J. Gunn. According to their marriage certificate, Elizabeth was 43 years old, single, and Frederick was 53 years old and widowed. They did not have children. Elizabeth J. Gunn according to her tombstone in the Wilks cemetery called "Charlie Hope" in Brunswick County, died June 1892. Frederick A. Lewis' who died September 30, 1875, and his second wife Almira Kelly who died in 1861 are buried in the Wilks cemetery "Charlie Hope" as well. It is not known why Almira Kelly is buried in this cemetery. Frederick A. Lewis was the son of Ruel Lewis and Sylvia Abernathy. His brother John Alexander Lewis had grandchildren that later would marry into the Gunn family. |
