Lucy Jane Burruss

Lucy Jane Burruss was the first girl, and first child born to the marriage of Nelson Burruss and his second wife, Lavinia Crawford.  Lucy Jane was born in Louisa County on July 28, 1818.  She grew up a typical young lady of the times.  She could read and write, though we don't know if she had a formal education.  She had traveled to Kentucky, possibly Illinois, and to visit family in the counties of Virginia.

At the age of 20, she married William Gathright in Louisa County, Virginia on November 21, 1838.   They had at least 5 children:
Sarah Jane Gathright born 1840
Elizabeth A. Gathright born 1841
John B. Gathright born 1844
Matthew W. Gathright born 1846
Lucy M. Gathright born February 1850

At the time of the 1850 Census, William Gathright was a 44 year old farmer, living in Goochland County, Virginia.  Also living in the family home were Knibb age 13, and Francis E. Woodson a merchant age 27.  They may have been boarders.
