May 27, 2008: Noticed damage to Liliums in old main garden plot from deer browsing. June 2: "Mountain Bluet" and Viburnum trilobum in bloom. Total number of daffodils 'deadheaded'= 1781!! June 3: Two of the shrub roses beginning to bloom. Also, the white Siberian iris. Buds on the two peonys June 8: Pink oriental poppies, deep pink peony, "Harrison's Yellow" rose; and the large, yellow iris are blooming. June 9: Put Celosia pluminosa 'New Look' in planters for in front of breezeway. Has deep red leaves and flowers June 12: Hemerocalis 'Stella DiOro' and Lilium Martagon Hybrids beginning to bloom. June 26: H. 'Stella DiOro' in full, glorious bloom in 3 different locations. First hollyhock blossom across the lane. June 28: Hemerocalis fulva now in full display in 'wild' bed across the road and in the several transplanted spots. July 15: Hybrid hemerocalis began blooming. Tall, red monarda is in full bloom. Phlox making a nice display. July 20: Tall, red monarda blooming. Also, self seeded white cleome and various colored nicotiana. Nice display of Gloriosa Daisies at the near edge of the back field to the right of the large "cranberry bush." These were started by CGS with seeds and some plants a few years ago in a row and are self seeding over time. July 30: Clematis viginiana on the front wall and added fencing began blooming. August 5: Self-seeded, white cleomes blooming below the lower wall at the far left end, as usual. Also, many self-seeded nicotiana blooming among the weeds and grass at the rear of the old main garden. Aug. 15: Hollyhocks looking very poor because of all the rain. So far rain in Aug. here= 3.65". Aug. 22: Some of the shrub roses are reblooming. 2 of the perennial asters- Sept. Ruby & Treasurer- starting. Aug. 26: Hosta grandiflora above the rock garden beginning to bloom. September 13: Began cutting down hollyhock stalks; flowering is all but over. Short, pink sedum is blooming. Sept. 24: "Mrs. Gesell's" perennial aster blossoms beginning to show. Sept. 27: The pink perennial aster that is always last to bloom is coloring. October 13: Cut down perennials in the "main garden" and the "RR ties" bed using the "brush hog." October 18: First frost and freeze of the fall- a bit later than usual. Farm low temperature= 28.8 F October 28: Heavy rain until 1500. Then wet, heavy snow into the night. Next morning, 10/29, some 2" on the ground. Shrubs and some trees weighted down. Huge forsythia only a short mound. One stem of the Amur maple across the road at corner of old barn foundation weighted down to the ground- looks bad for it. November 3: First blossom on one of the "holiday" cacti. All 4 of them have buds, some quite large. By the end of November all 3 kinds of "holiday" cacti had bloomed-white with pink center, rose red & an orange January 12, 2009- Happy New Year! Started geranium cuttings under a fluorescent light that were taken from the pants in the house for the winter. Only one of them has a flower at this time. I pruned the top growth. Jan. 20: Repotted some houseCro plants. Took a root cutting of a wiry type cactus and started it in a small clay pot. Jan. 21: Orange "holiday" cactus is re-blooming, after first flowering in November. White one has a bud! February 16: Descendent of old, blue African violet from "Ma" Ketz is blooming. Lineage goes back to 1940s! Feb. 20: The remaining stem of the cut back "Crown of Thorns" now has one blossom. There are 2 new sprouts March 1: The six geraniums at the back SE living room window are beginning to bloom. One at front window has three blossoms, with one just ending. It has has had at least one flower all winter. Geranium cuttings started on January 12th (see above) are doing very well!! Mar. 15: Lone crocus shoot showing at sunny end of post light wall where snow has melted off. Mar. 17: Snow completely gone from flower bed at front across the lane. Many daffodil leaves showing nicely. Mar. 28: Came across 1st crocus blooming in the grass at the end of the house. Odd how these self sow in lawn Mar. 29: Broadcast saved 2008 Gloriosa Daisy" seeds in the front bed across the road. Some plants alredy exist. April 1: Crocuses at front around the small front yard maple tree are blooming. Face southwest so PM sun. Apr. 10: A few daffodils across the road in front bed opened flowers. Apr. 14: Most of 'daffys' across the road are blooming. Apr. 16: Forsythia "Meadowlark" at end of stonewall across the road above the driveway began blooming. Apr. 18: Huge forsythia "meadowlark" behind low stone wall at center of lower border and the long time white hyacinths above the front end of the rock garden began blooming. Apr. 20: Geraniums in the house have many and large, gorgeous flower heads. Best ever, I believe. Apr. 27: Bloosoms on the Magnolia soulangeana began opening. |
