For your birthday, I got you exactly what you wanted.

You were talking about diamonds, so I got you a little league jersey.

You said you were feeling fat, so I purchased you diet pills.

You've been worried about your hair, so I now you have clippers.

These were all sensitive gifts,
thoughtful gifts,
like you always ask for,
things I had to interpret to see their value.
They were supposed to make you aware
just how I care.

You've been miserable at work, so I told your boss exactly what you thought of him.

I spied you glancing at the self-help section, so I decided to get you institutionalized.

And now, with all these presents at your feet,
to make you happy,
simply to please you,
you're looking at me funny.
So tell me, honey, should I buy you glasses?
