Oh Great Spirit
I.
Well I still remember my Grandma
Singing to me
Songs about the Indian way
Tales of a people lost in their own land
Hunting grounds and freedom washed away
And I still remember my Poppa
In his ancient battle gear
Ready to give his life for King and Country
But they said "you ain't no White man"
And to forget about the vote
The liquor store is closed to all you Cree.
Chorus I:
Oh Great Spirit
Of Wind, Moon, and Sun
Oh Great Spirit
What have they done
(Will freedom ever come)
(Thy will be done)II.
II.
I remember when I was a child all the things
they used to say
Hey nigger
boy, you wagon burners son
So I cried a river blue to
my teacher after school
She said it's sad but nothing can be done
So I turned my back one day no I didn't want to
be
Any different from the other kids at school
But a tugging in my heart ancestral drumming
in my soul
Made me realize I'd been a fool
bridge:
The Eagles flying our children crying
Lost in life
Campfires burning warriors turning
A soldiers cold knife
III.
As I look across the waters I see the fish upon
the shore
I wonder when the poisoning will end
Nature has a balance but the scales are tipped
and tainted
Her precious cargo empty round the bend
As I look into the eyes of a hundred thousand
people
Two hundred years of pain look back at me
We cannot change the past and the future is uncertain
In smokehouses we dream autonomy
"I am my brothers keeper"
