Description: | The first thing that most people notice about Manes is how well her appearance matches her name. Those who feel fear at her name usually notice what is frightening about her first, her deep-seeing, blood red eyes, the smooth movements of her muscles beneath her absolute white skin, the long polished claws of her feet. There is no doubt that Manes can be rather daunting at first glance, but then, there are few dragons who aren't. She is, however, a very beautiful dragon as well, and the people who see this best are the ones who find themselves intrigued by the first mention of her. Manes is a graceful creature, her Star City blood very clear in her long face and mostly unadorned body, and she is perfectly formed and muscled. The true Manes, however, isn't one or the other, not simply beautiful or frightening, and it would be unwise to assume that she could be truly judged by her appearance alone. |
Personality: |
Those who try to sum up Manes by just her appearance will always find themselves disappointed, for she is neither vain nor terrifying. If she has any inkling that there are some who look at her slender and powerful body as anything more than the physical shell that she sees it as, Manes ignores it. Most dragons who come onto her will be promptly taught to leave her alone, and those simply interested in her are brushed off. Manes hates wasting time with flirtation and needless talk, and she most certainly never goes out of her way to play up to her somewhat ghostly appearance.
Her single greatest concern is furthering the aims of the Yevaanavi, and she does so with a business like precision. The magnitude of her job weighs down on her greatly, as there is nothing more important to her than the keeping of balance between the life and death which delineates everything in Manes's world. She is absolutely humorless when it comes to what she does, and despite the fact that Manes usually doesn’t take the time to be openly hostile to the living, she is not afraid to show those who question her first hand the importance of the balance she keeps. She is not, however, a mindless follower of the Yevaanavi - she has seen the reality of her beliefs, she knows the chaos that would reign without the Guardians, without the Yevaanavi. Manes is willing to give up almost anything in order to get her job done. Perhaps her only weakness is her friends... for while she would never hesitate to sacrifice the life of someone she didn't care for, Manes will do almost anything to save the lives of those she loves. The only family that she has ever had, Manes holds her friends, most Yevaanavi themselves, to be of very high importance. She is very attuned to them, and it is ironic that while she is always trying to prevent the hurt of their emotions, she often finds herself disappointed by them. Manes's most redeeming quality, however, is not her willingness to self-sacrifice, but her ability to forgive and to understand. Her own hurts cannot measure up enough in Manes's mind to pull down any of her connections to her family. The perspective that the Yevaanavi have gifted her with, and her strong family sense, have given Manes a great appreciation for new life, for children. They are very precious to her, and she has something of a way with them. Though Guardianship occupies most of her time, Manes helps with the upbringing of Yevaanavi children when she can, and has a dream of one day having her own. For while Manes may live life as though invincible, her own end looms over her always, and as that shadow grows, so does her desire to leave a legacy behind. |
History: |
Manes was born to Ghost and Karaiment in the 38th clutch of Darkling Dawn. One of many hatchlings, Manes took little initial interest in her parents or siblings, and made her first act in the world bonding to Cahnor. Though for most, Manes's strange bond was mystifying she had no question in her mind about him... their partnership was simply a fact of the world. And as she was unconcerned with her own blood family, so Manes dismissed Cahnor's inexplicable origins. That mattered little to her anyway, for now that they were bonded Manes felt that she would never be separated from Cahnor - they were one. And as one, they took in stride their being given to the Jhiirsai.
Though neither Cahnor nor Manes knew Beca Chxalli or her bonds, one of which was Manes's half-sister, the pair was comfortable even in strange circumstances as long as they were together. Manes was especially curious about things, wanting to learn all that she could about her new home and its people. As hatchlings, Cahnor and Manes lived a carefree life... solely concerned about one another and the mysterious world around them. Learning and playing, Manes was a content little dragoness... all seemed perfect to her. It was only when thoughts of Academy life began to press in on her that Manes began to feel any distaste for her life. Though Cahnor seemed somewhat ready for the school experience, Manes balked at the stories of the structured life that they would find there... it seemed like an end to the adventure that her life had been up until that point. So it was that when Manes's spiritual abilities attracted the Yevaanavi, the dragoness did not hesitate to take them up on their offer of taking her in. Though Cahnor had not been invited originally, the Yevaanavi could not ignore the connection between the two, and were forced to open up to Manes's bond as well as herself. However, Cahnor didn't take well to the spirit realm of Quxaan, as Manes did, but her worries ebbed quickly as the intriguing universe of the Yevaanavi opened up to her. Interest and talent allowed Manes to rise quickly through the ranks, leaving Cahnor further and further behind. When she was brought into the Guardians, Manes ignored the pain that her bond felt at this ultimate separation. She was swept away by the romance, and adventure of the Yevaanvi, feelings which eventually turned to extreme devotion. Manes had no idea that her other half considered their relationship to have broken apart... at least not until she was brought back together with Cahnor for a sponsoring mission. Impossible and shocking though it was, Manes was swiftly made to realize that she no longer knew this grown Cahnor. He was dark and withdrawn, and made no attempt to hide his feelings of betrayal from her. Manes could not believe what had happened... and though she feared for Cahnor and herself, the greatest question in her mind was of how this would affect their mission together. |
