KILLING HEIDI in the beginning

Killing Heidi are an amazing band out of Violet Town (population aprox. 2,000) in North-Eastern Victoria. They first appeared playing an amazing acoustic gig at the Violet Town arts festival in 1996. They played several original tunes as well as some great covers of Smashing Pumpkins and other great bands. It was at this gig that they were spotted by Bent Records who they recorded two songs, Kettle, and Morning. Before they know it they were unearthed by triple j out of Goulburn Valley, along with Stealth, in 1997, with their song Kettle, giving them national airplay.

They consider themselves quite lucky in being unearthed by triple j, competing against 37 other local entries. They only really started calling themselves a band about one week before the unearthing. Their winning entry was recorded and sent in right at the last minute, and they didn't really think they had much chance of winning.

The band consists of four members, including brother & sister, Jesse (guitar) & Ella Hooper (vocals), who were just 15 and 13 years old when they were unearthed two years ago. The band also has Adam Pedretti on drums and Warren Jenkin on bass.

After being unearthed, Jessie & Ella had one more year of school before being offered a record deal with Bent Records. They turned down the offer because they wanted to wait for something bigger, which they did get, with Village.

Their new, soon to be released album, Reflector, was recorded in the Melbourne Kiss Studio (now Sing Sing), in 1999, with Paul Kosky (NIL, Rage Against The Machine, The Clouds, etc.). The new album features their single, Weir, which received much airplay on triple j, and proved quite popular with the triple j audience.

Killing Heidi, along with other triple j unearthed bands, The Tenants, and Melvin Star, played at the Opera House on May 21. Have a look nice review of their gig there.
