Welcome

            My Bevill/Spears Page

This page is an attempt to explain the connection between the Spears and Bevill familys. The following is taken from The Bevill Burton Family History written by Mildred SOLLEY MORRIS.  I remember, as a child, the work that went into compiling this book.  Verifying stories, writing down memories, and putting together pictures.  They had such a wonderful time doing it and I learned a lot about family history and its importance.  Maybe that was when the genealogy bug first bit me.

Lillie Cheba Bevill & John Preston Spears

Lillie Cheba Bevill was born August 4, 1876 at the Bevill Farm near Alto, Texas.  She was the 8th child and youngest of 4 daughters born to William Thomas and Julia Ann Catherine SALISBURY EARNEST BEVILL.  Cheba was only five years old when her mother died in 1881.  She grew up at the Bevill Farm and lived near there all of her life. Cheba married John Preston SPEARS on January 15, 1893.  Together they had 9 children.  Their place is described in The Bevill-Burton Family History, writtten by Mildred Solley Morris, as having a large front lawn graced by huge Hickory Nut, Oak, and Pine trees where a huge table would be set up every year for the Bevill reunion. John Preston is described as taking trips from time to time,  being gone for long periods of time.  Cheba was left to take care of the children and their farm by herself. She churned and molded butter, some say it was the best in the area.  From her kitchen always came the delicious aromas of a fresh baked cake or her wonderful tea cakes.  Her most outstanding talent was her nursing skill.  She went everywhere to help care for the ill. Dr. J. B. Ramsey always sent for her to nurse his patients and he said many times, no one was as good as she at caring for the ill. Cheba died March 15, 1946 and is buried at Old Palestine Cemetary in Alto, Texas.  John Preston died May 28, 1948 and is buried beside Cheba.
