Trick ? Or Treat ?

As a small child. I can rememeber all the excitement of Halloween! Although we were poor and didn't have the money to buy the fancy costumes...non the less we were very creative to say the least. We would fashion ourselves as fat men...decked out in bibbed overalls stuffed with pillows, and we would paint our faces with anything we could find. Sometimes it took weeks to get off whatever it was we used...LOL! We couldn't wait for the sun to go down..and the lights to go on, a sure signal that everyone was ready to accept all the goblins. We would grab our pillow cases...running from door to door, laughing and of course checking the bag to see how we were doing? |

Remembering moms words..now only go to houses of people we know...knowing all the while we would hit as many as we possibly could...hoping that we would arrive home with the biggest pillow case full of candy. Stay with your sister...keep hold of you little brothers hand. Stick together! All were the last minute commands from mom. Yes we did listen! Probably with a much deaf ear. |

On and on into the night we would go. Growing more tired as the evening went on...racing to see who could get to the next house first to ring the bell... and then wait for everyone to shout.....TRICK OR TREAT! Watching carefully as the person place a piece or two of candy in our pillow cases, watching our eyes light up as they did so..and wondering how in the world they knew it was us? And yes...remembering our manners to say Thank You! |

Never wanting to get too old to go Trick or Treating...but it happened! Then I married and had my own children and yep...same thing...they didn't want the store bought costumes like everyone else...they wanted mom to show her creativeness again and each and every year I would go through the exciting ritual with them of trying to decide...Who are we going to be this year? I think the funniest was probably when my son was Dolly Parton and my daughter was Pippy Longstalking! Oh..those were the wonderful years to say the least. | |
 |
Then the real goblins started to surface...and????They were finding razer blades and horrible things being done to the children...discouraging the practice of Trick Or Treat! I ask...how can adults be so cruel? Never did I find the answers! As my grandchildren are now starting to recognize the practice of Trick Or Treating...I fear what they might find when out on one of their adventures into the night, Now accompanied by and adult only...and going only to people that they know personally for fear that they might become victims themselves. |
