"The surname KIRMAN is of occupational origin and was given to someone who was a keeper or guardian of the Church. They were church custodians, the laymen in charge of the church property. In some places the duties were the same as those of the CROSIER. Church laymen were also known as KERMAN, KIRKHOUSE, KIRKMAN, KIRKUS."
Once my research reached the 1700's and early 1800's the spelling of the surname became a real problem. In one marriage record alone the surname was spelt 3 different ways. So far I have come across KIRMAN, KERMAN, KIRMON, KIRMOND and KERMOND for the same people in different records.
