Regretting

Those fucking bastards.

If they touch one hair on Scully's head, I'll fucking kill them.

I'm pacing the floor in my apartment, waiting, willing the phone to ring. Glancing at my watch again for the umpteenth time, I curse aloud.

The phone rings and I jump out of my skin.

I grab it and growl ferociously. "Mulder!"

"Ah, Agent Mulder..."

"Where is Scully?!" I demand, unable to help myself.

A cold hatred fills my veins as I hear the vicious chuckle on the other end. "In time, Agent Mulder, in time."

"You touch her and I'll kill you," I snarl.

"Please, enough of the threats." The nameless voice continues, "You'll listen, and you'll do exactly as you're told, or maybe you'll never see Agent Scully again."

"I want to know that Scully is alive. Let me talk to her!"

There is a muffled sound coming from the mouthpiece and then suddenly I hear Scully's voice.

"Mulder!" Scully's voice is high, frightened.

"Scully! Scu-"

"Okay, Agent Mulder. You have your proof. Now listen carefully."

I did everything I was told to. But it all went to shit anyway.

I never should've allowed Skinner to bring backup. It was me--me they wanted, not Scully. I was to show up at the designated drop site, alone. We were to make the trade--Scully for the diskette.

But Skinner wouldn't let me go unless I did it his way.

"Mulder!" he had barked. "They've already gotten to one of the two of my best agents. You're not going in there blind."

I gave in, wore the wire, let Skinner plant his tails.

I was there, had my man in sight, the diskette clenched in my left hand, my right hand at my holster. There, in the shadows, was Scully--

Then chaos reigned.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

It all happened so fast.

I saw Scully, she was so close.

I heard her yelling out to me but I couldn't make out the words.

Suddenly, another agent crashed out from the underbrush, gun pulled.

"No!" I screamed, and time slowed to a crawl.

I dropped and pulled my own gun, but the man was already retreating, returning gunfire with the other agent. Scully was pulled into a waiting car and was gone before I even had time to get off a shot.

I collapsed on the asphalt street, crying Scully's name over and over.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

It's been three days and I haven't heard anything about Scully. I haven't slept or eaten since I lost Scully a second time. I stink. I feel like dying.

Scully, I'm sorry, so sorry.

I'm locked in my apartment, waiting for the phone, a message, something. There's a knock at the door; my gun is out and I'm at the peephole instantly. Seeing nothing, I cautiously ease the door open.

On the ground is an envelope.

Back inside the apartment, I open it.

Stifling back a scream, I drop the envelope, gagging in revulsion.

Inside, once perfectly manicured, are ten bloody, broken fingernails.

END

Author's notes: Triton gave me a 500 word challenge and the words 'broken fingernail.' I'm sorry, this is what came to mind first.

Let me know if you loved it or hated it. Thanks for reading.
