Jammers
Robert Rauschenberg at Ace Contemporary Exhibitions
Pieces of cloth and rattan poles suggesting sails and
masts, with slight variations connoting various poetic associations. This is the exact equivalent of Jonathan Winters
picking up an object and placing it in the universe with a toss of wit (which,
for the benefit of every bleeding jackass in "the wide, sweet world,"
is the point of Duchamp's Fountain).
Untitled is canvas-colored and
tied to an empty glass bottle like a ship being kedged. Windfall is white with empty paint cans
sewn into the bottom hem. Stallion
is black satin, Scan
a colorful weave, Pimiento red
on white with a red-covered pole sewn into the hem, SEADOG a band of black over bare rattan, and CO Ploy is two "sails," beige
over brown.
