Heart Matters Chapter Three:

"Hi." Ginger greeted Jeff when she saw him in the drug store.

"Ginger." He barely looked her in the eyes.

"You want3 to do something this weekend?" She ventured.

"What? You mean like a date?"

"No, I mean something. Anything."

"I’d rather not." He still didn’t look her in the eye.

"Ok, so you have a girlfriend. Big deal. I have a boyfriend." She continued.

"It’s not that. It’s just, I haven’t seen you in 4 years."

"WE had that conversation yesterday." She rolled her eyes.

"So what. You can’t drop in here and expect everything to be like it was when you left. It doesn’t work that way." He informed her.

"I’m not trying to make it seem that way. I just missed you."

"Then why didn’t you write? Call? Anything?"

"I couldn’t. Look, Jeff, my dad doesn’t even know I had a baby." She was close to tears.

"And how did you hide that from him?"

"I had my ways, did what it took. When I got to Kansas, I realized that I couldn’t keep the baby. I don’t know what happened to him. I wish I did."

A tremendous feeling of guilt washed over Jeff as he watched her cry in front of him.

"Mom, I’m home." Jeff entered his house still feeling guilty about Ginger.

"Hi."

"Where’s Aaron?" He looked around the living room.

"Linda took him to Gina’s house."

"Oh."

"I have to go to work. Bye."

"Bye.

Anne hadn’t been gone for 10 minutes when the back door slammed closed.

"Anyone home?" The familiar voice flooded through the door.

"Hank!" Jeff stood up. "How are you?"

"Not so bad. I saw Ginger today."

Jeff hadn’t seen his brother in over a year, and already Hank was talking about Ginger. "Yeah." He answered uneasily.

"You’ve seen her?"

"A couple of times."

"Does she know?" Hank turned serious.

"Know what?"

"I mean are you going to tell her?" Hank asked again.

"Tell her what?" Jeff knew what Hank was talking about, but hoped it wasn’t.

"About Aaron."
