Richard Oatman (270)

Richard Oatman (270) Genealogy Richard (Isaac, Samuel, George, John, Johannes), son of Isaac and Mary "Polly" (Otis) Oatman, was born in Jefferson County, New York, on 24 July 1806 and died 8 February 1891 at the age of 84 years, 6 months and 12 days.

Earlier, Richard was listed as the son of #22, Benjamin and Bethia (Smith) Oatman. However, the Register of Deaths of the Town of Adams, New York, lists Richard as the son of Isaac Oatman of Connecticut and Polly _____ of Connecti-cut. This corresponds to the 1810 census which lists a male in Isaac's house-hold under the age of 10 years, and again in 1830, a male aged 20-30.

Richard married Mary "Polly" Havens, of Hartford, Washington County, New York, daughter of Rhodes and Amy L. (Kenyon) Havens. Polly was born in Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut, 10 March 1807, and her death, attributed to "lupus of face", was registered on 3 December 1896 at the age of 89 years, 8 months, 24 days, at Adams Center, New York. Richard (whose death was charged to heart and gangrene of the foot) and Polly are both buried in State Road (Honeyville) Cemetery, Adams Center, New York.

Richard built and operated a turning-mill, with a corn grinder attached, for a number of years at Adams Center. He was also a carpenter-and-joiner at one time, as well as a farmer.

He apparently had more children than those listed below, as indicated by the census records. He is listed in the 1835 state census of Adams Center with three males and three females in his household, including two males of voting age; one of these may have been his father, Isaac, whose second wife Sinai was listed as head of her own household. In 1840 the household consisted of: one male under 5 (Halsey); one male 5-10 (Austin); one male 10-15 (unknown); one male 30-40 (Richard); one male 60-70 (Isaac again?); one female under 5 (unknown); one female 5-10 (Anna); one female 20-30 (unknown); and one female 30-40 (Polly). In 1880 Richard's sister Lucy Bates was living with him.

Austin is listed as working in a carriage shop in 1870, and as a laborer and farmer in the 1890 Adams Center Business Directory.

His wife, Lydia, was the daughter of R. C. and Prudence Parker. In 1880, Austin and Lydia have living with them Sarah Talcott, age 13, and said to be a step-daughter of Austin's, which indicates that Lydia was married to a Talcott before her marriage to Austin. Sarah died 8 May 1884, at the age of 15 years, 11 months, 13 days, and her inscription is on Austin's monument at State Road (Honeyville) Cemetery, which lies near the Talcott stones. Lydia had a brother George who m. Austin's sister Millissa, a sister to Martha Ann who m. Walter Oatman, and another sister Phila, who m. Walter's brother Edward.
