Civil War Swords Added to Collections

Excerpt from the Masterpiece Gazette Fall 2001 Issue; ". . . At Civil War sites across Missouri, state historic sites interpret this struggle and preserve artifacts that tell the story of this time in history.

Recently, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources acquired two important artifacts from this time period - a sword from a Union general who fought at the Battle of Pilot Knob and a sword presented to a Missouri State Militia general following the Battle of Lexington. These two artifacts will greatly enhance the department's interpretation of these two battles and the war in general. . ."

Go to Masterpiece Gazette Fall 2001 Issue; to read all about these new historical acquisitions.

Handkerchief Dolls

My wife picked me up a Handkerchief Doll today from a Church sale.

In the Civil War days, when fathers, brothers and Uncles left to go forth to fight, they would give a handkerchief to their daughter or to a young girl of the household. With this handkerchief, she would make a doll to keep fond thoughts of someone special off to war.

She kept the doll close by her. She loved it and later when she married, the doll was carried with her, tucked away in her flowers or wedding dress as she walked down the aisle.

Sometimes the handkerchief doll was the only thing left to remember a loved one by.
