Hello everyone. My name is Myron and I live in Tempe, Arizona, USA. I have been involved with chess since I was President of my High School chess club over 40 years ago. I have been President of the Tempe Chess Club since 1972. We still meet every Thursday evening at the same location (the Pyle Adult Recreation Center on Southern and Rural in Tempe). If you ever find yourself in the middle of the Great Sonoran Desert (the Phoenix, AZ, area, also known as the Valley of the Sun) and are looking for Over the Board chess games you are welcome to come to a club meeting. There is no cost. I am currently certified by FIDE as an International Arbiter of Chess and by USCF as a National Tournament Director. I am also currently the Chairman of the USCF Outreach Committee and a member of other USCF committees. I am not now and never will be a great chessplayer, but I love the game not only because it is fun and develops the thought process; not only because it is at once an art, a science, and a sport, but also because it can make a significant contribution to society. More on this later. I have been involved with computers and computer related items, both as a hobby and professionally, since 1970. I have been on the Internet since 1986, when all interaction was command line (text based). Other interests include (but are not limited to) most physical sciences, most types of music (but especially folk music), journalism, and science fiction.
One of my heroes is Benjamin Franklin. It seems like whatever I have been interested in,
whether it is science, technology, philately, communication, governance, or journalism he has
been there and done that - very well. Of course, the most applicable area is chess. Benjamin
Franklin was the first American to recognize the value of chess to society and actively
promote chess.
I am not going to waste everyone's time going into details about how chess can be used as a
positive alternative to various temptations faced by today's youth or how it can be a tool for
prevention of anti-social behavior. If you are interested in more information go to my chess
