Clarington Masters Lacrosse League was started in 2002. It’s main focus was to get parents of children playing in the Clarington Minor Lacrosse Association to learn the game of lacrosse. We hoped that the parents would get more involved either as a coach, playing catch with their child or just so they have the understanding of how hard it is to run the length of the floor or how hard it is to pass and throw.
The league was setup and we sixty players signup, about half had never played a game of lacrosse in their life. We had five brave woman signup to play so we decided to have a mixed league with four teams. It worked out very well having women on the teams as all the guys were on their best behavior.
2003
In 2003 the league stayed as a mixed league. We had six teams with ten women divided between the teams. The over all talent level rose compared to the 2002 season . We also started an OLA Senior Masters team that had a great time going to weekend tournaments around the province and were Senior “B” Finalist at the OLA Provincials.
2004
In 2004 we had women that wanted to play but didn’t want to play in the mixed masters league so we decided to setup the Clarington Women’s Masters League. Thirty women signed up and split into teams two each week. The men’s league fielded four teams again with a mixture of players that have never played, players that have played masters since 2002, players that hadn’t played since they were kids and former junior “A” players. The Clarington Masters Senior Tournament team had another fun filled time going to weekend tournaments and qualified to play in the “A” division at the 2004 Provincial Championship. It must have been a really good time because I can’t remember were we finished at the provincials.
