The Old Crown Pub is the first in Britain to be run by a community cooperative.

On 25th February 2004, HRH, the Prince of Wales, came to Hesket Newmarket to offer his support as part of the Pub is the Hub campaign.

His first stop was at the village shop where he spent time chatting to Liz and Jonathan. He called in at the Fell Idle Tea room where he chatted to some of the older residents.

After leaving Fellside Stores, he strolled down the village street stopping to chat to the many villagers who were waiting to see him in spite of the bitterly cold weather.

There were a lot of frozen policemen and women from the local constabulary and some even colder looking men from the special protection squad.

He then went on a tour of Hesket Newmarket Brewery with Mike Parker, the brewery manager.

Jim Fearnley, who founded the brewery during his time as landlord of the Old Crown, had travelled up from Wales with his wife Liz to meet Prince Charles and explain about the various ales.

Prince Charles unveiled a plaque to commemorate the opening of the new extension to the brewery
