Lecture by Clinton Bennett, PhD with Laju Balani, M.Div.

Many schools of interpretation of Vedanta (Vedantic) philosophy.
Two important philosophers: (1) Shankara (788 - 820 CE). Plurality (the many) is an illusion. Only the ONE (Brahman) is real. Worship of Isvara (a personal side of Brahman) is a low level religious practice. Samadhi = dissolution of self and selves/there is no I-you, only IT. Ayam atma brahma (everything is brahman).(E. p 276)

(2) Ramanuja (1017 - 1137). Brahman is both non- personal and Isvara: the many are the One’s modes of expression. Individuals are distinct but participate in God, its essence. Samadhi = realization of absolute dependence on God. (E p 297 - 8).
