The Watchful (Ok bad pun I know...sorry) |
Sarai woke up early and stretched. "Well that was some day yesterday," she said to her watch. It made a yawning noise. "You aren't kidding," it said. "But at least we've got all four now," said Sarai quietly, as she stood up and walked over to a table where Lilly lay sprawled out with words written all over paper. "The Dream Team...Nightmare Hunters...The Night Fairs...Dream Protectors...Dream Knights...the Mid Knights...what was she doing?" "Trying to name you...look she wrote down on that page all the words related to nightmares she could think of. The other girls must have told her about the nightmares then," the watch said. Sarai shrugged and picked up a piece of paper. "She's got a lot of ideas hasn't she? I like this one," Sarai muttered. "Sleep Keepers. It's funny. Strange that she didn't think of our real name." "Are you going to tell them all the whole story?" "When they wake up. Let them sleep though. Dreams usually happen right before you awaken," she said, moving to call the kitchen about some breakfast. The next to awaken was Avana who immediately went to work on her wings. Parts began to float in the air, sorting themselves as her hands worked on a small bunch of electrical wires that worked their way throughout the wings. Her focus was intense and complete. "Wha...Wow. You can make things fly?" Avana looked up to see Lilly sitting up and staring. She rolled her eyes and went back to work. Emma wouldn't be as bad or as curious. But Lilly wouldn't shut up once she got going. The cat girl was still sleeping soundly, curled up in a ball on the bed. A noise in the other room suggested someone had just finished showering. "What are those? Do they work?" Lilly asked, crawling over a bed to get a closer look. Avana tried to ignore her. It was difficult as she kept trying to play with the parts suspended in the air. "Hey, good morning Ms. Leader! What shall we do first? Oh! I picked a name!" Lilly, scrambled back over the bed to the table. "Where did I put it?" "Leader?" "Yeah, we decided last night," Lilly said, continuing to look through her pile of papers. "Umm ok, don't worry about the name then. Room service left some breakfast. I put the fruit in the fridge and the eggs in the microwave," Sarai said, moving to sit on the bed. Emma stirred slightly and yawned groggily. She opened one eye and smiled at everyone. "Morning," she said quitely. "Good morning everyone! Glad you're all awake now! Eat up. You have a big day ahead," the British voice said. Lilly looked confused, Emma smiled at the watch, and Avana kept working. "He's right. We have a lot to talk about. So eat," Sarai said. She got a few looks but they obeyed. After all, they had all agreed she would be their leader. A short while later they had all gathered to hear Sarai out, even Avana had set aside her work to pay attention. Sarai took a deep breath. "Well, we are the Dream Angels. We are born when the world is in need of us," she began. "The monsters that we face are the nightmares of children. They can only be released by a very powerful sorcerer. I don't know who is doing it yet, but we must find out and stop him." "Really? That's so...cool!" Lilly said, smiling brightly. Emma looked uncomfortable, but was ready to believe anything. Avana looked skeptical. "And if I do this. If I help you. We'll be even?" she asked. "Yes. We will." "And if you all don't mind, I'd like to ask a favor." Everyone looked at Sarai's watch. Including Sarai. "Just touch me. That's all," he said. The girls looked at each other and then shrugged seeing no problem. Emma stopped at the last moment. "Sarai how long have you had this watch?" "Umm...a while, why?" "You said an unknown sorcerer..." "I trust him," Sarai said, and Emma saw something in her eyes that suggested she should too. And as she touched the watch, the memories hit her. His fingers ran across the baby's cheek. "I love you," the young boy whispered, kissing her forehead. "Emma? Are you okay?" Sarai asked. The poor cat girl pointed at a young man standing by Sarai. "You...I saw you!" "Yes. You have the power to see memories. But only memories," the boy said. "And you should look in the mirror." He held out his hand to Emma, and she took it carefully. As Emma approached the mirror she was shocked to see her ears were gone, as was her tail. But they had been replaced by a pair of large red wings on her back. "How the...?" "Your powers are still working themselves out. Don't worry. You'll get it under control," he said. "You should have seen it Emma! There was this great flash and you collapsed and then Sarai's watch came off her wrist and formed him and it was so COOOL!" Lilly said, trying to show Emma with her hands. It wasn't working so well. "Well?" Sarai gave her former watch a questioning look. "My name is Eddie. I...I am here to help you. But don't expect much. Sarai's the one who found everything out," the young man said. "This is how I used to be, but I was changed into a watch until you all were old enough to release me. I appreciate your trust. It means more than you know. You can't imagine what it was like to be a watch" "I'm sure..." Emma said quietly. She looked around at the other girls. Who was that baby? Was someone here the child? Her mind was spinning with questions. "So now that Emma's awake. Perhaps it is time for proper introductions. After all, you don't even know anything more than everyone's names," Eddie suggested. Sarai had stepped back to the bed and was sitting on it watching him closely. He had lied to her, but she had no problem letting him lead for a while. Well, for now at least... |
