Mt. Charleston, Spring Mountains National Recreation Area, NV

Mt. Charleston is immediately northwest of Las Vegas, the highest point in the Spring Mountains, at almost 13000 ft. The surrounding recreational area contains all the various climates of the Great Basin region, all smudged up against each other. It makes for a conveniently cool getaway in the summer, so we've been up there pretty often....but not usually with a camera. E.g., we were there just 2 weeks ago on Labor Day weekend, spent the night at some cabins and endured an hour-long downpour with hail, but we forgot the camera. This time, we caught a perfect blue-sky day for a hike through the aspens, near the Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort at Lee's Canyon.

Date of visit: 09/22/02.

The ski area has no snow yet....
But the trees definitely know it's autumn ( I use this one for PC wallpaper at work )
Climate changes as altitude drops -- well, they look different to us -- temperature readings are from the Explorer
