Tawfik el Hakim

Born in 1898,el Hakim is considered as one of Egypt's 20th century's leading writers.After studying in Cairo and in Paris,he worked as a public prosecutor in the provinces and as an advisor in the ministry of education,so gaining a wide knowledge of rural and urban Egypt.His first playlet was originally written in french when he was a student in Paris.He is a voluminous author of novels,short stories,essays and plays :of the latter,if we enumerate individually his many one-act plays,which mainly deal with social problems,there are over fifty.

El Hakim is responsible for the best written and most successful absurdist play of the sixties:The tree climber. He also wrote other famous plays such as:al safqa(the deal)(1956),al warta(the fix) and banq el qalaq(The bank of anxiety)(1967)

His autobiographical work sijn el omr(the prison of age) came out in 1964. Ughneyat al mawt (song of death)is the final item in a collection of twenty one short plays forming a large volume entitled Masrah el mujtama(Cairo:Makatabat al ADAB,1950).
