Its origin is really just a bit of a joke. The pyramid is situated on Jacobsen Road, Ballandean in the grounds of Henty Estate which is a private property. It is now a vineyard but when the workers were clearing the land to plant vines, there were all these big rocks that had been excavated, lying around all over the place. The owner of the property was speaking with the viticulturalist at the time, and asked "what are we going to do about all these rocks?". As a joke, the viticulturalist said more in fun than anything, "with so many, we could probably built a pyramid." The owner thought this a great idea, spoke to some clever engineer in Brisbane who said it was very feasible and easy to do. And as they say, SO IT WAS DONE.
