Canamera Park Earth Day
April 21, 2005

Well, it was warm enough for a late afternoon fun fly. The wind however was simply not there. I arrived just after 6pm to find Many of the kids trying their best to get those kites in the air.
As soon as David Goodfellow arrived with his family things started to change. Over the next few minutes the wind changed directions several times. The wind then picked it's final direction and blew nice steady winds right till dusk.
By 6:30pm the fields of Canamera were full of children playing and flying kites. I can count at least 9 kites in this photo. The round one near the upper left is actually the moon. Please note this photo only shows about a third of the entire flying field. There were families flying all around us. It was a great turnout!
Dennis and I both had our windmills up and running. Dennis built the Renegade themed one on the right and I built the Canadian themed one on the left. Much as we suspected they seemed to "generate" quite a few questions. Some people think we are generating electricity with them. Now what is the green stunt kite in the front all about?
It'a a HQ Breeze stunt kite I picked up in Florida last month. It has a tiny 1570 Avia carbon frame. The kite has a wind range of 1-7 mph. Ziggy Racek walked over right away and pointed out that it was built in Poland. Ziggy then proceeded to show everyone how easy it is to trick with a Polish kite!
Dennis Ische is pictured with a white sailed delta. He built it with help from Arlene. Dennis mentioned that it is known as a Martin Powell which is a high aspect ratio kite. It's 8 feet by 2 1/2 feet. it flys well too!
The "BIG" surprise of the evening was a new creation by Kerry St Dennis and Lucy Jonkman. Kerry told me this was the first single line kite he and Lucy had ever built.
This kite is called a Dopero and it's 12' 3" wide and 8' high. The name Dopero comes from Do(double), Pe(pearson), Ro(roller). So I guess it's safe to say it is a large descendant of the roller family.
And yes of course it flys too! Kerry has built this large kite for use with a KAP rig he is working on. KAP is short for Kite Aerial Photograhy. Can't wait to see some snap shots Kerry!
Steve Finch came out to show us what you can do with some tyvek and few coloured Sharpies! These kites are known as low aspect ratio kites. Sponge Bob never looked so good Steve!
Mark Groshens is pictured on the left and Ed Hummel is in shadow on the right. Ready to give that Cody kite another flight "Fast Eddy"? Ed made some bridle changes to the Cody variation he bought at last years GLKS auction. He indicated it was now flying a little more steadily this year.
Two hours is a very short time to fly so time passed very quickly. A blue Martin Lester Scuba Diver known as Art Ross decided to join us just before 8pm. He stayed up till we left at dusk. Art would like to thank Dennis for the ride on his Shazam delta. We all packed up and many of us went over to Ernies for some laughs and roadhouse fare. Another fun year at Canamera for all that attended!
