Dumfries Kitefest
Sunday June 5th, 2005

The Ninth installment of this annual festival was the best one yet! Over thirty kitefliers from all over southern Ontario attended. We even had two visitors from the GLKS club of Buffalo. Several hundred people came out to enjoy the show, make a kite at the workshop or simply fly a kite. Pictured is the Cambridge City Honda events truck parked beside the brand new Dumfries Park sign. The new park sign looks great!
As advertised Kitefest became the "Meca" of windmill events in Ontario. In all 11 windmills and their creators made it out for the day. A very cool looking windmill garden indeed! A Premier Kite Jolly Roger Penta kite was awarded to Jocelyn Bedard for her Flame inspired windmill. Tom Beatty also won an itemax Kite & Glider for the people's choice award. It was truly a fun experience to see and hear all those windmills spinning in one place!
The sled workshop was as popular as ever! Many sled kites sported pretty fancy artwork. The kids really get a kick out of the first flight at the park.
For those that did not make a kite they either brought a kite from home or bought one at the event. It was truly a family affair with several generations sharing in all the fun.
Tom Beatty and Bob White try and get that snap thingy to hold onto that other thingy. After you get a chance to fly your windmill a few times assembly becomes very quick. Many of the windmills went up for their very first spin at Dumfries.
Ziggy thought someone should be getting a photo of me I guess. Ted Shaw gets his Premier lady Rokkaku ready to fly.
Don Brownridge and Eric Curtis taking advantage of the high winds on Sunday. They both staked down their kites which allowed them to mingle with everyone else for a bit.
The kids get into some pretty funny angles while creating a kite. Sometimes you have to suffer for the sake of the art.
The workshop is a real family affair. sisters, Brothers, moms and dads are always willing to offer an artistic idea or even a helping hand.
My next door neighbors, Matthew and his mom enjoyed the workshop as well.It took a few trys but Matthew got his kite flying!
I managed to snap nine of the eleven windmills in this shot. Many people walked up to the windmills stood underneath and simply enjoyed watching them spin. They seemed to create a nice relaxing moment for those that took the time to stop and watch for a bit.
Mark Groshens' President of the Wind Climbers Kite Club. Mark is always there to lend a helping hand. He also has a real way with others too. "Hey, don't touch that unless you have some money!"
"Yes, I am very famous Dave, really!" Ed Hummel trying to convince Dave Aikman of his power in the press. Ed was in the Cambridge Times newspaper for 3 days in a row! "Ed is the king of the world!"
The Twins, Michelle Welesford and Bob White enjoy a shaddy break from the hot sun.
Kerry St Dennis brought his newest bear launcher. Nice applique on the sail Kerry! Dennis Ische provided his family of parachuting Bears to try out the new dropper. The first bear up must have been pretty nervous. I heard the bears & other critters all had nice soft landings. Thanks to Lucy Jonkman and Kerry for doing several candy drops. It was a big highight for many of the children that scrambled for those goodies!
> Better Late than never. Especially when you win a prize for bringing your windmill. Jocelyn and Andre Bedard's windmill was the final windmill to go up on Sunday. Even a missing part did not stop them. We scaveneged a part from another windmill and got it spinning in no time! They got in on the windmill draw just in time to win a nice Premier Penta kite.
This huge lobster seemed to have fun even though there was no beach or salt water nearby. Gary Mark and Michelle Welesford' vast array of inflatables are always welcome guests!
In Memory of Merv Cooper one of his kites will be flown at every event this year. That is Merv's kitty cat enjoying some sunshine. In the background you can also see Gary and Michelle's Scuba diver and 80 ft Octopus. That huge inflatable draws the crowds attention every time it is launched.
Geoff Maher and Family have been to many Dumfries events over the years. It's great to see so many families together for the day! Picnic lunches and lots of water made for a fun day! So Geoff,.... does E = MC cubed then? :-)
A final shot of the flying field. Spike dances across the field in front of all those great looking windmills. I would also like to thank Mike Jr. Dinsmore, who took the time to teach my nephew Ryan how to fly a stunt kite. I think Ryan is hooked on flying and wants to join us at the next kite festival!
