NATO Ball

They couple looked sharp as they entered the ballroom. He in his dress whites and she in a navy blue strapless dress. Everyone followed them for a second or two, the happy couple, married for 28 years looked as happy tonight as they had on their wedding night. They had been through a lot and had survived it. Their love deepening as each year and trial passed. The parents of four children, three boys and a daughter, the eldest serving on the new Seahawk, an aviator like his father and the last who was headed for his first year at the Naval Academy, keeping everyone in the dark as to what he wanted to do.

They had attended several NATO Balls in their life, nearly all as a couple except the one separated by ill-made choices. The most memorable was the one the year after that where he had proposed, getting down on one knee in the middle of the ballroom, shocking everyone as he professed his love to her and asked her to marry him. They had all stood by, holding their breath as she simply stared at him. Many didn't know that they were a couple and had no clue what the answer would be until she pulled him up and whispered yes. He then kissed her and pulled out of his pocket the ring, sparkling like their smiles. Everyone clapped as the happy couple kissed again, and then left the dance floor as the DJ selected a slow song leaving the couple to dance alone.

Lt. Commander AJ Roberts grew up with the story and made his way over to the DJ booth to request the song, the song that was played every year.

As soon as the music started, as everyone else cleared it, the couple made their way to the dance floor, pulling each other close, gliding across the floor to the beat of the song. The love for each other flowing from one to the other through eye contact only as the song played on.

These times are troubled and these times are good
And they're always gonna be, they rise and they fall
We take'em all the way that we should
Together you and me forsaking them all
And deep in the night and by the light of day
It always looks the same, true love always does
And here by your side, or a million miles away
Nothin's ever gonna change the way I feel
The way it is, is the way that it was

Harm continued to gaze into Mac' eyes, lost in them seeing her smile as he began to mouth the words of the song

When I said I do, I meant that I will
till the end of all time
Be faithful and true, devoted to you
That's what I had in mind when I said I do

Well this old world keep changin',
and this world stays the same
For all who came before and it goes hand in hand
Only you and I can undo all that we became
That makes us so much more than a woman and a man
And after everything that comes and goes around
Has only passed us by,
here alone in our dreams
I know there's a lonely heart in every lost and found
But forever you and I will be the ones
Who found out what forever means

When I said I do, I meant that I will
till the end of all time
Be faithful and true, devoted to
That's what I had in mind when I said I do

Truer than true, you know that I'll always be there for you
That's what I had in mind
That's what I had in mind
When I said I do.

When the song finished she was silently singing with Harm. "That's what I meant when I said I do." He said just loud enough for Mac. Harm then reached up and wiped a tear from her eye and kissed her. They breathlessly broke apart and headed off the floor to join their friends.
