France grants Cambodia limited self-government within the French Union. Meanwhile, Cambodian Communist guerrilla forces team up with Vietnamese Communists in an attempt to take greater control of Cambodia from the French.
After World War II, India and Britain resume talks on Indian independence. The Muslim League asks for India to be divided into two separate states. Congress, however, does not agree to the division of India.
The Soviet Union embarks on a sustained assult of the political structure of most of the countries in Eastern Europe. This prompts
Sir Winston Churchill
to remark that an "iron curtain" is descending over the middle of Europe.
At the Czechoslovakian national elections, more than a third of the parliamentary seats go to the Communist party. The Communists take control of the ministries of education, interior and communications.
A new government headed by the Communist leader Klement Gottwald is established in Czechoslovakia.
An interim government is installed. Jawaharlal Nehru, the leader of Congress, becomes India's first prime minister.
