and his wife as (50-60). Next door is Jacob Coleman and his wife, both (20-30).
The 1850 Census for Union Township, Montgomery County, Indiana gives more information. It shows John Coleman, age 60, born in New Jersey, who could not read or write. He is listed as a farmer with real estate valued at $1500. His wife is Polly, age 50. He has a son, Henderson J. (21), daughter Elizabeth (25) and is living next to possibly another son, Jacob (30), who had a wife, Nancy and 5 children.
The 1860 Census was mostly illegible. By the 1870 Census, John's wife had died (Aug. 29, 1864, at the age of 68) and John was living with his son, Henderson and his family on the same property). John was listed as age 79, retired, born in New Jersey and eligible to vote. (page 219)
The History of Montgomery County Indiana, by H.W. Beckwith, published in 1881, contains a biography of John's son, Henderson J. Coleman, who, it says, was "born in Scott County, Indiana, January 14, 1829. His parents, John and Mary (Jacobs) Coleman removed thence to Franklin County in his early infancy and lived there until 1833. At that date they came to Union Township and made their residence on the homestead where Mr. Coleman now lives." The biography also provides John and Mary's death dates.) According to it, John died April 19, 1874, at age 84.
John and Mary (Polly's) children were:

1. Jacob(2), born about 1820, Indiana. Married 27 Feb. 1840, Nancy Stump, in Montgomery county, Indiana, where they lived until after the 1850 Census, after which they are not found, except for their first son, John, on the 1880 Census. It is not known whether they died prior to the 1870 Census or they moved to a different location.
2. Julia Ann, (this name is only recorded by the Ohio Coleman family, who say she married a man named Hollowell.) She is possibly the girl aged 5 to 10 on the 1830 Census. She may have either died or married before the 1840 Census, but no marriage records for her have been found in Montgomery County, Indiana. She must have been born between 1820-1825.
3. Elizabeth, born about 1825, in Indiana, Married 7 July 1853, Joseph Hollowell.
4. Henderson J., born 14 Jan. 1829, Scott County, Indiana. Married Deborah Edwards, 16 Sept. 1852. He was still alive and well, with his wife and daughter and two sons living with him on the 1900 Census. He became a well known veterinary practitioner and large land owner in Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, Indiana.

Jacob(1) Coleman

Census records lead us to believe Jacob(1) was born between 1780-1790. The 1830 Census lists him as 40-50 years old. Census reports, as well as biographical notes by his sons, Benjamin, James and Jacob, reveal that Jacob(1) was born in New Jersey.
No anecdotes of his life seem to have survived. He died before the informative 1850 Census. Hamilton County, Ohio's records were almost completely destroyed during two separate fires in the nineteenth century.
In the 1820 Census, Jacob(1) was reported living in Miami Township, Hamilton, Ohio, where he apparently spent the rest of his life. He was a farmer by occupation and his family consisted of his wife (age 26-45) who was probably Mary (Polly) Bunnell (Bonnell). There were two sons and three daughters, all under the age of ten, as well as a man and woman, age 45 or older (probably either his or his wife's parent) and an unidentified white male between the ages of 16 and 18.
Land records who he bought land from John and Martha Piatt on 14 June 1821. The land was lots #5,and 6, in Section 6 of Miami Township. (Deed Book W-2), pp. 337-8). On 27 July 1824, he bought more land, also in Section 6, from Stephen Howell. (Deed Book 22, p. 148)
Ten years after the 1820 Census he was married to his fourth wife, Nancy, who was listed on the 1830 Census as 20-30 years old. Children living at that time were: one son under 5, one son 5-10, two sons 10-15, one daughter under 5, and two daughters 10-15.
It appears from the Census records that one daughter had died between 1820-1830. This daughter under 5 on the 1830 Census is not included in family records and probably did not survive as well. The only possible mention of their names comes from an 1894 account written before Benjamin died. It was published in The History of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. Included in the list of Benjamin Coleman's siblings are three names not found elsewhere. They are: Sarah, Pollie, and Catherine.
Apparently Jacob's wives continued to die due to serious dysentery. Jacob's wives and children are as follows:
1. Mary (Polly) Bunnell (Bonnell), who was a descendant of the Bonnell family of New Jersey, about who much genealogy has been written. Jacob and Mary were probably married about 1810, although no records have been found. I believe their children are as follows:
1) Sarah (who died as a child)
2) Priscilla, born 1810-1820. Married John Roberts about 1839.
3) John(3), born about 1812. Married Mary_______ bef. 1837.
4) Benjamin, born 8 Feb. 1814 (which date agrees with every Census record). Married 1) Elizabeth Gal lamore (Gilmore) in 1836, Married 2) Sarah Ann (Jacobs) Crane, 17 Dec. 1841. Died 18 June 1895.
5) Hannah(2), born between 1810-1820, Married Samuel Davis, 19 Nov. 1935. Died before 1848.
6) Pollie (who died as a child, and must have been born after 1820.)

2. Nancy Taylor, 19 Dec. 1822, by whom he had:
1) Edward, born between 1823-25

3. Anna Martin, 13 Nov. 1825, by whom he reportedly had no children.

4. Nancy_______ 1826/7 Their children are, I believe, as follows:

1) Jacob(2), born 13 Dec. 1828. Married 11 Dec. 1852, Barbara Frances Dale. Died 4 July 1896, Wood side, Utah.
2) Catherine (who died as a child) born between 1825-1830.
3) Uriah, born 6 April 1831, Married abt. 1878, Martha Larsen. Died 22 Jan. 1901, Juab County, Utah.
4) James(1), born 13 Nov. 1832. Married 5 Oct. 1858, Riller Wellman. Died 18 Sept. 1903, Jasper County, Illinois.
