193B EDINBURGH GUIDES
Summer Term 2002
This term is very short, and if we didn't meet on bank holidays, there would only be 7 meetings!  So the patrol leaders decided we would meet all the way through, but we've tried to put the main activities on dates other than holidays.  If you can't come on a holiday Monday, don't worry but if you can, we'll be there.
22nd April - co-operative games evening, organised by the BP challenge people.  Click here for some of the games we played (on the main games page).

29th April
-we made kites and flew them (well sort of!) at the park.  Click here for more on how we made them, and what traditions there are to do with kites.  Thanks to Eilidh's mum for helping tonight.  There are some photos of us flying them here.

6th May
(Bank holiday) - Indian sweets (click here for some international recipes) and rockets.  The sweets were very gooey, and would have been easier if Sandra had remembered the tin opener for the condensed milk!  Susan came to the rescue though and it all worked out in the end.  Thanks to Rebecca D's mum for helping out with these.  The rockets were great, we did them just outside and some of them nearly hit the gutter 2 floors up!

13th May - Asian evening: shadow puppets, mehndi and international games.  Thanks to Lauren's mum who helped this week.  After all we did this week (it was very busy) everyone has nearly got their World Cultures badge.  To get the badge you need to check the syllabus at the bottom of the page & see what you need to find out.  If you tell Sandra at a meeting what you've found out then you can get your badge... if you can't be bothered then you don't get the badge!

20th May (Victoria Day holiday) - start a camp blanket (or continue with one) for those who want them, a patrol challenge for those who don't.  Thanks to Mary for helping people with their blankets.  A couple of photos are here.

27th May
- meet at the campsite, try out the flying fox!  Everyone got a go on the flying fox and even though certain guides who shall remain nameless almost managed to break it by "trying to make it go faster", all enjoyed it and nobody hurt themselves!  Those going to camp reminded themselves how to put up a tent.  And everyone had a snack of an apple or banana stuffed with chocolate, rolos and marshmallows and heated in the fire.  Thanks for Mrs Walker & Mrs Sinclair for helping out with the flying fox!  Photos of guides stuffing their faces here.

3rd June
(Jubilee holiday) - Colinton Jubilee Challenge (patrol cooking).  Each patrol had a party barbecue and had to create their own jubilee meal.  The winners (from Dell guides) for food quality was Indonesian satay kebabs, and the winners for imagination and getting into the spirit (you should have seen the costumes!) were from our guides & produced a castle complete with soldiers from toast, beans and sausages and an incredible crown from sponge cake, cream and sweets.  One of our patrols also won one of the prizes for the challenges.  These included fifties dancing, estimating the height of a tree and the number of balls in a bag, answering a quiz and tying knots.  Photos here.

10th June - craft night - swaps for camp.  We made little men from half a tube of polos.  We each made one for the people going to camp, for them to swap, then we made one for ourselves - but some of us just ate the polos instead!

17th June - Sailing and canoeing at Loncraigs.  thanks to Amy's mum for helping to keep an eye on things.  Photos

24th June - Olympics night, organised by the BP challenge people.  Thanks to Iona's mum for helping make sure nobody was tooooo badly injured by the midges.  Photos

World Cultures badge
The international activities we're doing this term all go towards the World Cultures interest badge.  The five clauses we are looking at are:

5: Find out about a festival or celebration involving light or candles such as Hanukah, Diwali, Loy Krathrong or Advent.  Make something for that festival, eg. a div (small clay lamp) or a special candle.
Click
here for a collection of festivals which might fit this clause.  We made rockets on 7th May.  Rockets are used in lots of different festivals.

7: Face and body painting are popular in many parts of the world.  Try face painting or mehndi decoration on your hands or feet.  Find out who would use it and when.
Click here for some background and patterns for mehndi.  Most of us tried this on 13th May.

8: Play a traditional board game from another country.
Click
here for how to play Tapatan, a game popular in the Philipines.  It is also played in other countries - click here for more.  We tried this on 13th May.
Mancala is played all over Asia and Africa.  Click here to play it online, here for the rules, or here for its history.
Click
here to find out about Alleyway, a board game from Eastern Europe.  Some of us tried this game on 13th May.

10: Make a kite (traditional in china and Thailand) and fly it.  Find out about kite festivals.
Click here for more on this clause.  We made kites and flew them on 29th April.

11: Puppetry is a very strong tradition worldwide.  Find out about its importance in other countries, eg. shadow puppets from Indonesia.  Make puppets and use them to tell a traditional story to Rainbows, Brownies or the rest of your unit.
Click here for some info on puppets and how to make them  We made some puppets on 13th May.
