College Scholarship Service Financial Aid PROFILE--A non-federal aid application used by over 800 colleges, universities, and private scholarship programs--usually as a supplement to the FAFSA--to determine eligibility for institutional funds. Students use a simple registration form to enter the PROFILE processing system. CSS then customized a packet of application materials for each student that reflects both his/her personal characteristics and the unique data requirements of the colleges to which the student is applying. The PROFILE registration forms are available in high school counseling offices; the customized application packets are mailed directly to students.

Free Application for Federal Student Aid--This form is required to determine eligibility for federal financial aid. Families who hope to receive any type of federal aid should fill out this application as soon as possible, but after Jan. 1 of the enrollment yr, and send it directly to the processing agency. The processor calculates the student's need for federal assistance. This information is then sent to colleges to help financial aid administrators develop financial aid packages.
