The Trains Of The Underground

The cars started out as simple "tubes" with seats in them. It was discovered that the human
occupants needed windows, even if there was nothing to look at except the tunnel walls.

As time passed the designs became "light and airy" as seen in this 1930's interior.
The windows were larger and the seats were compartmentalized.

The cars became streamlined as seen in this picture
of a 1937 car on the Hammersmith & City Line.

Many of today's Underground cars are rather plain and utilitarian.
However, some of the cars from the 30's and 40's are still in operation
on certain lines. The cars generally stay with the same line that they
started on. The rolling stock is rarely traded between lines. Thus,
the newer lines have newer cars.
