Concept Cars give the public a glimpse into the future of car design. Although not always intended for production, models that receive overwhelming public approval, such as the Volkswagen Beetle and Dodge Viper, sometimes do come to life.

VW Microbus

In a gesture to the much-loved VW Bus of the 50's and 60's, VW has launched the Microbus concept vehicle. The Microbus is intended to recapture some of the spell the original Bus cast over its owners while still offering the latest conveniences necessary for life on today's open road. The original Bus had its engine—a notoriously under-powered 4-cylinder—placed over the rear axles. With the Microbus, VW engineers have moved the engine compartment to the front of the vehicle and placed a potent V6 engine under the hood. Standard 20-inch alloy wheels complete the exterior package. Inside, there are two, 7-inch monitors for viewing films or playing video games and 4 smaller monitors placed behind each headrest. Second-row seats can swivel 180-degrees to allow rear passengers to face each other.

CHRYSLER CROSSFIRE Chrysler Crossfire

Once again, DaimlerChrysler dabbles in the realm of the 2-seater sports car with its Crossfire Concept Coupe and the results are breathtaking. The Crossfire is a stunning example of traditional American styling cues married to European sports car dimensions. Powered by a 2.7-liter, 275-horsepower V6, the Crossfire is capable of achieving a 0-60 time of 5.8 seconds. Enormous 19-inch front wheels and 21-inch rear wheels are sure to keep the car firmly planted on the ground. Interior details are equally stunning, featuring rich leather seating and artfully placed brushed-aluminum inserts on the center console and doors. Like others before it—and with the right amount of public input—this is one Chrysler concept that could very easily come to life in the not-too-distant future.

Jeep Willys

The latest in a series of Jeep concepts, the Willys is designed to test the public's attitude toward what in all likelihood will be the replacement for the aging Wrangler. The Willys concept emphasizes traditional Jeep styling and rugged versatility. Light-weight injection-molded plastic parts slash vehicle weight by 50% and are 100% recyclable. Further weight-savings are recognized by the use of an aluminum frame. Using a process known as Frame-web, the carbon-fiber body panels are molded to the aluminum frame, resulting in a light yet extremely durable vehicle. The weight-saving material means the Willys does not require a large motor to propel it over rocks and washes. The concept vehicle is powered by a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder supercharged engine good for 160-horsepower and 155 lb.-ft. of torque and claims a 15:1 weight-to-horsepower ratio.

Dodge Super8 Hemi Dodge Super8 Hemi

The Super8 Hemi blends the best attributes of both car and truck into one unique vehicle. Far from subtle, the Super8 combines themes from many decades of automotive design, the most noticeable being the reverse-angle A-pillar. This unique design, in which the pillars on either side of the front windshield are raked backwards away from the driver, is a styling cue often found on Cadillacs and Chryslers of the late 50's. If the styling doesn't catch your eye, then take a look under the hood. There you will find a 353 cu. in. hemi motor which can accelerate the Super8 Hemi to 60 mph in just under six seconds and achieve a top speed of 154 mph. The interior is tastefully laid out, awash in leather and brushed aluminum trim. Another unique feature of the Super8 Hemi is its rear seat, which is elevated slightly, providing theater-like seating for the rear seat passengers.

Dodge Powerbox

The Powerbox is a hybrid concept vehicle that signals the future of the combustion engine. It uses a supercharged V6 fueled by compressed natural gas (CNG) and an electric motor that adds power when passing or accelerating. This combination results in a vehicle 60% more fuel-efficient than a comparably equipped gasoline V8 and has near-zero emissions. The body is constructed of lightweight thermoplastics, which greatly reduce over-all body weight. The Powerbox is equipped with a special suspension that lowers the vehicle 3-inches when placed in park, making entry and exit almost car-like. The interior space is quite generous due to the battery pack being stored below the passenger compartment floor. Styling is identifiably Dodge and could even offer a peek at the shape of the next Dodge Durango.

Ford Explorer Sportsman Ford Explorer Sportsman

Based on the new 2002 Explorer, the Sportsman is designed for the fly fisherman who needs to get far away from civilization to enjoy his sport. The Sportsman features running boards that deploy only when the doors are open and double as storage containers. It has a removable roof rack with modular attachments for securing tents, bikes and fishing gear and huge 17-inch custom alloy wheels and tires for traversing muddy back-roads. Inside, the Sportsman makes liberal use of Bloodwood, a rich dark red wood imported from Australia, and blends it with dark-grained leathers and aluminum trim pieces to create a rustic, rugged look. In keeping true to its mission, the Sportsman loses the rear-folding third seat of the Explorer and replaces it with a 30-gallon live-bait tank cleverly hidden in the rear floor.

Ford Ex

"A dune buggy for the 21st century" might best describe this Ford concept. Taking the "no boundaries" theme to the limit, the EX is composed of lightweight body panels attached to a Chrome-Moly steel frame. The transfer case and dual-radiator fans have been moved to the rear of the vehicle, thus achieving a perfect 50/50-weight distribution. The bronze-tinted windshield folds flat and attaches to the hood and the lightweight body panels are removable, secured in place by aluminum fasteners. The interior is comprised of two seats, wrapped in a durable textile that is resistant to sun and water damage. To ease entry and exit, the steering wheel column and instrument pods are attached and swing to the side. Occupants are surrounded by a full roll cage and held in place with four-point safety belts.

Ford Forty-Nine Ford Forty-Nine

This beautifully-styled car draws its inspiration from the beloved 1949 Ford sedan. Ford believes this car will take America on a "sentimental drag-race" down memory lane. With its 20-inch chrome wheels, slab-sided styling and low roofline, it is not hard to envision Americans wanting to race this car. The Forty-Nine is powered by the Thunderbird's 3.9-liter engine and proudly displays a plaque on its fenders that states so in large script. The roof is covered by an enormous glass panel that extends from the windshield back; the panel covers all the support pillars, and basically forms the car's upper body. Inside, a two-tone color scheme is divided at the console, with everything below covered in black and everything above in Sienna leather grain. Controls, normally located on the dash, are neatly arranged around the center of the steering wheel and a single pod houses the speedometer, gauge and warning lights.

Audi Project Steppenwolf

OK, for those over 40, no jokes about the band. There is no explanation as to where the name comes from, but name or not, Audi's upscale, all-road concept takes the SUV/Wagon hybrid to new levels. Among the many good ideas contained in Project Steppenwolf is a large shelf that slides out from the rear of the vehicle providing storage compartments for a hydraulic winch and tire repair kit. The top is removable and can be replaced with either a hard, carbon fiber shell or fabric soft-top. Inside, Audi's tasteful interior treatment delights the eye and the touch. Rich leathers and artfully styled aluminum trim pieces surround the driver and passengers and would be equally comfortable in the finest luxury car. Power for Project Steppenwolf comes from a 3.2-liter V6 engine producing 225-horsepower and is teamed to a six-speed manual gearbox. Audi's quattro all-wheel drive system ensures surefooted traction and with 8.8-inches of ground clearance, Project Steppenwolf just may be the ultimate off-road luxury vehicle.

Honda Model X Honda Model X

Honda actually designed this vehicle around a specific group of buyers: young males. Conceived at the X-games in San Diego in 1998, the Model X is designed to meet all the needs of young, active, college-aged males. It has no center pillar between the front and rear doors, allowing easy access for loading bulking gear. The rear hatch folds flat and a portion of the rear roof panel slides forward to create a pickup-like bed. The floor material is made of a durable rubber compound that can be hosed down for quick clean ups. Inside the Model X, designers attempted to create a dorm-room atmosphere—a place where guys could hang out. The front-seat back slides forward, essentially reversing the direction the seat faces, allowing occupants to face each other. The stereo system can play CD's or MP3's and is equipped with digital satellite radio for distortion free listening.

Volvo Adventure Concept

Volvo stresses this concept is not representative of the first Volvo SUV, which is scheduled to appear in showrooms in a few years. Instead, the Adventure Concept Car (or ACC) is designed to gauge the public's reaction to key design criteria and innovations. The ACC is large for a Volvo, with a cab-forward design that plays down the rough-and-tumble SUV image in favor of a more sophisticated yet powerful look. Seating is provided for four occupants and amenities include a refrigerator, TV and high-end stereo system. Volvo engineers designed the ACC around five basic assumptions: the vehicle must drive like car, must offer first class protection, must be powerful, must be environmentally friendly and must have generous interior space. The ACC combines the best qualities of a Volvo sedan, an SUV and a mobile home.

Volvo Safety Concept Volvo Safety Concept

The Volvo Safety Concept Car (or SCC) is actually a joint venture between Ford and Volvo. It is a showcase for the technical safety designs that will soon find their way into production cars across the Ford family. Wrapped inside a stylish four-door wagon, the SCC features such amazing advances as an optical scanner that determines the drivers height by scanning for the eyes and then adjusting the seat, steering wheel, mirrors and pedals to the optimal position. To ensure the driver an unobstructed field of view, the A-pillars have see-through Plexiglas openings and a built-in radar unit assists in back-up maneuvers. There are also video cameras in place of mirrors and a fingerprint I.D. system that allows the driver to unlock the doors simply by lifting the door handle.

Nissan aT (Alpha- T)

Within the next five years, Nissan plans to enter the full-sized truck wars and the aT concept truck is a pretty strong representation of what the public may soon be offered. This concept is based on the industrial look of high-end power tools and features a massive front fascia and headlights. The rear window is retractable and the bed has an electronic tailgate and sliding ramp. The aT features a 300-horsepower V8, 22.5-inch alloy wheels, an off-road suspension and 4-wheel drive. Inside the big truck, there is seating for four people and rear-seat passengers have a fold-down table and their own environmental controls. Because Nissan feels a full-size truck should be like a tool belt, there are storage compartments galore, both inside the cab and in the bed.

Nissan Z Concept Nissan Z Concept

In creating the new Z, Nissan designers tried hard to combine elements of the original 1970 Z car and the last generation 300ZX—considered by many to be two of the most beautifully styled Japanese sports cars ever built. The concept car features a 260-horsepower V6 engine that will appear in the final model when it goes on sale mid-year 2002. What the new Z won't have is the concept's 20-inch wheels and ultra-modern interior. The seat backs are hinged in the middle and fold forward, allowing easy access to rear storage areas. The hatch opens to reveal an aluminum strut tower brace and brushed-aluminum cargo area. Nissan says that when the new Z goes on sale, it should be priced under $30,000.

Cadillac Vizon

The Vizon combines the space efficiency of a modern SUV with the handling and ride characteristics of a car. It's sort of a sport wagon on steroids. Inside the Vizon there are four leather-clad seats, separated by a long center console that runs the length of the vehicle. The console is actually a storage area and can be used to stow skis or camping gear. Passenger's can choose from a series of entertainment venues including a DVD player with individual view screens mounted on the front seat backs. Power for the Vizon comes from a 4.2-liter V8 Northstar engine and is sent to the wheels via an all-wheel drive system. GM's StabiliTrak traction-control system is also onboard. Technical highlights include night-vision display, a rear-view video system and adaptive cruise control.

Buick Bengal Buick Bengal

This beautifully-styled coupe from Buick seats four and embodies subtle styling cues from the great Buicks of yesteryear. Not since the mid 80's—when the Grand National had young males flocking to the division's showrooms—has a Buick shown such potential to recapture the youth market. The Bengal sits on a long-wheelbase frame, with its 20-inch wheels pushed all the way to the corners of the vehicle. There is a clever tonneau cover and small third door that opens to reveal a large storage space for golf clubs or a second seat for two additional passengers. The Bengal is powered by a 250-horsepower V6 engine teamed with a 6-speed electronic transmission. Interior appointments include voice-activated controls, a color head-up display, and an enormous flat-panel speaker cleverly integrated into the length of the dash.

Oldsmobile O4

Oldsmobile emphasizes the European styling of the O4, pointing out the close working relationship with Italian styling giant Bertone. The O4 has seating for four and features a twin targa-top roof that can be adjusted to expose different parts of the cabin to the open air. An efficient turbo-charged four-cylinder engine teamed with a 5-speed manual transmission powers the O4 and produces a healthy 190-horsepower. Oldsmobile design teams intended the O4 to appeal to recent college graduates looking for a small, fun vehicle that could carry four people and their luggage. With Oldsmobile now destined for the history books, it would be a crime to send the O4 down the same path. Should GM choose to keep it alive, the O4's design cues could easily find a home in the Saturn line and bring some much needed styling flair to that division.

Pontiac REV Pontiac REV

The REV concept vehicle mixes sports car handling with SUV capabilities. On the road, the combination of all-wheel drive and a 245-horsepower V6 promises to deliver the driving excitement for which Pontiac is known. Take the REV off-road, and the adjustable suspension transforms it into a world-class rally car. The five-speed manual has no actual mechanical connection to the transmission, but instead uses a drive-by-wire joystick to shift gears, much like a video game. Inside, the REV is configured to be simple yet comfortable, with lightweight carbon-fiber seat frames covered by Lycra gel pads. REV also features four Motorola TalkAbout radios with built-in GPS, and an integrated first-aid kit and toolbox.

Chevrolet Borrego

Much like the REV concept, the Borrego combines the off-road ability of a rally car with legendary Chevrolet toughness. Designed to be enjoyed with friends, the Borrego features a unique mid-gate door just behind the front seats. When pushed forward, the mid-gate creates a passenger compartment seating two and a long cargo bed for hauling gear. Push the mid-gate back, and two more seats can be added along with a removable roof, which is stored beneath the bed. Self-inflating window seals keep the compartment watertight. Even with the extra seats, the Borrego still has a 3-foot cargo bed. Based on a Subaru platform, the Borrego features all-wheel drive and 2.5-liter horizontally-opposed 4-cylinder engine. Also included: on-board GPS system, OnStar, an air compressor and a pressurized water tank.

GMC Terracross GMC Terracross

While everyone else is morphing their cars into hybrid car/trucks, GMC is going in just opposite direction. The Terracross is an ultra-rugged SUV that integrates all the sophistication of a high-line automobile with the mobility of an off-road truck. Its clean design lines and muscular flanks are a direct appeal to today's young urban professionals. The Terracross is a showcase for such innovative ideas as: a 3-panel sliding sunroof, a configurable mid-gate and a minivan-like rear sliding doors. Inside, high-tech fabrics and brushed metals delight the eye. For convenience, the front passenger seat can swivel 180 degrees to face rear passengers. Because there is no B-pillar (the post that separates front and rear doors) it is easy to load large, bulky items from the side of the vehicle.

Acura RS-X

The RS-X is billed as a "prototype," not a concept. This means that what you are seeing here is a pretty close representation of the actual production vehicle. The RS-X is slated to replace the Integra in 2002, at which time Acura will drop its last remaining car name in favor of a designation, in this case, RS-X. Among its many new performance features are a 200-horsepower I-VTEC engine and six-speed manual transmission. Styling is not daring and remains true to the Integra's original concept as a fastback coupe. The cockpit has been redesigned and touts deeply contoured Recaro sport seats, full instrumentation, power moonroof and a 6-disc in-dash CD changer. With fewer and fewer coupes on the market, the RS-X principle competition will be the Toyota Celica and VW GTI.

Mazda RX8 Mazda RX8

Mazda teased the Detroit Auto Show crowd by unveiling the RX-8 concept sports car. Successor to the much-missed RX-7, the RX-8 continues the tradition of being powered by a rotary engine, this one producing 250-horsepower. Although styled to look like a coupe, Mazda has added two small doors directly behind the driver and passenger doors to allow easier access to the rear seats. The RX-8 employs a double-wishbone suspension set up and features 19-inch alloy wheels. The length of the body and position of the engine give the RX a perfect 50/50 weight distribution, a key element in designing a great handling car. Given the American market's strong move toward SUVs, it is uncertain that the RX-8 will ever make it to U.S. soil even if this show beauty becomes reality in Japan. Keep your fingers crossed.

Hummer H2 Sport Utility Truck

Hummer created the H2 SUT (sport utility truck) from the roots of the H2 SUV, and then added the best elements of a pickup truck to create the Granddaddy of all off-road vehicles. Its short front- and rear-end overhangs allow for amazing approach and departure angles and the 17-inch tires pretty much assure safe passage over the worst terrain. Like the new Avalanche and Borrego, the H2 SUT incorporates a folding center mid-gate that allows for increased cargo or passenger volume, depending on its position. Technical highlights include a 360-degree infrared night-vision system mounted to the roof, GPS navigation and the OnStar system. The interior of the H2 SUT is a far cry from the original Hummer, creating a comfortable and stylish yet rugged environment for those lucky enough to be onboard. Brushed-aluminum faceplates, full instrumentation and a concert stereo with an in-dash CD are but a few items on the long list of standard features. Under the hood, GM's 6.0-liter Vortec V8 is mated to an electronic 5-speed transmission and full-time all-wheel drive is standard.
