A weak team in 1991, the Surge acquired former Iowa State QB Dave Archer for the 1992 season. A NFL veteran of several years, Archer provided the leadership Sacramento needed. The Surge posted an 8-2 record in 1992 en route to a win in World Bowl II. Their trek to the championship included a dramatic last second field goal to beat Barcelona in the first round playoffs. The success of Sacramento led to the CFL awarding the city with a team after the WLAF folded. They, like most other CFL teams in the US, failed due to a lack of support.
