CORDOVA & RINCON TOSS SEVENTH NO-HITTER IN PIRATES HISTORY
On Sat. July 12,1997, at Three Rivers Stadium in front the first mid-season sellout (44,119) at Three Rivers Stadium since 1977, Francisco Cordova and Ricardo Rincon combined to throw the seventh no- hitter in the 111-year history of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Cordova, a 25-year-old right-handed native of Veracruz, Mexico, held the Houston Astros hitless for nine innings and his roommate Ricardo Rincon, 27, also a native of Veracruz pitched a hitless tenth inning to give the Pirates the win. The game remained scoreless into the ninth as Chris Holt and Billy Wagner shut Pittsburgh down into extra innings. John Hudek started the 10th for Houston and struck out Dale Sveum before walking Jason Kendall. Jose Guillen lined to center, but pinch-hitter Turner Ward walked and Mark Smith, batting for Rincon, crushed an 0-1 pitch deep over the left-field fence for his third home tun of the season. The combined no-hitter was the first Pirate no-hitter since 8/9/76, when left-hander John Candelaria held the Dodgers hitless at Three Rivers in a 2-0 win. It was the first combined no-hitter in Pirates' history and the first multiple-pitcher no-no to go extra innings in major league history. The Astros were no-hit victims for the third time in franchise history and the first since 1969. It was the second no-hitter in the majors in 1997 as Kevin Brown of the Florida Marlins turned the trick at San Francisco on 6/10. It marked the first time Houston had been held hitless since 4/30/69 when Jim Maloney of the Reds accomplished the feat at Cincinnati. It was the first combined no-hitter in the major leagues since 9/11/91 when Kent Mercker (six innings), Mark Wohlers (two) and Alejandro Pena (one) no-hit the Padres at Fulton-County Stadium.
