Selected with the third overall pick in the 1997 draft. The first of two first-round picks by the Seahawks (Walter Jones sixth overall). Seattle had acquired the choice from the Atlanta Falcons on March 28, along with a third-round pick for first (11th overall), second, third, and fourth-round choices. Seattle had acquired the 11th overall pick from the Chicago Bears for quarterback Rick Mirer on February 18, 1997.
Started all 16 games at right cornerback. Voted to the AFC Pro Bowl squad. Finished fourth in the AFC with seven interceptions. Scored the Seahawks first touchdown of the season with a 42-yard interception return in a 38-0 victory over the Eagles (9/6). Recorded three passes defensed while the defense limited Philadelphia to just 174 yards of total offense.
Started 10 games at right cornerback. Missed six games with a broken right thumb suffered in Game 9. Finished third on the team with eight tackles in first NFL game against the Jets on August 31. Recorded his first career interception versus Tennessee on October 5. Intercepted the pass at the Seahawks' one-yard line. Forced a fumble versus Oakland on October 26. Broke his thumb early in Game 9 at Denver on November 2, but continued to play throughout the game. Inactive for Games 10-15, but returned to start in a season finale victory over San Francisco on December 21.
:Started all 37 games over his final three seasons after redshirting in 1993. First-team All-Big 10 Conference as a sophomore and junior. All-conference all-academic pick. Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year in 1996 as selected by the conference coaches despite not having an interception. Finished that season with 39 tackles and a team-leading 15 passes defensed Finished his career with 152 tackles, six interceptions and five tackles for loss. Averaged 25.2 yards on 20 kickoff returns with one touchdown and 9.5 on 27 punt returns. Majored in Business.
