The eventual Victor from Poland* in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic 50km walk leads some Mexicans, and the Spanish legend Massana.

The final top 3 in the Atlanta 1996 Olympic 50km walk;
1. Robert Korzeniowski (POL) 3:43.30
2. Mikhail Schennikov (RUSS) 3:43.46
3. Valentin Massana (SP) 3:44.19

The Official Robert Korzeniowski website...Excellent webpage....note it helps if you can read Polish....
Korzeniowski didnt stop there but kept on walking at the front to take the 2000 Sydney Olympic 50km walk in 3hr 42min AND 20km walk in 1hr18min59, the first in history to do the double?!!!
(a rather unfit Jon (webmaster of this page) had the privelege of competing in the trials for (in the 20km & 50km), and watching the race at Stadium Australia, see this webpage)

Korzeniowski set a world record of 3hr 36min for the 50km walk in 2002 2 years later.

Korzeniowski has done the "hat-trick"!!!,
and taken the 50km Walk in Athens 2004
for the 3rd Olympics in a row,
making him the master of this event for over 12 years!!!
Like Carl Lewis dominated the Olympic Long Jump for over a decade, Korzeniowski has made the Olympic 50km walk his own over more than a decade!!!

Good profile of the 20 year Korzeniowski Racewalking Odyssey on the VRWC website in the 25/10/04 heel and toe newsletter....
Deakes took a Bronze in the 20k at Athens 2004, and was DQ in the Athens 50k while trying to mix it with Korzeniowski...[Australians to compete in both the 20km walk AND the 50km walk at Sydney 2000 included; Nathan Deakes, who was close to the medals in the 50km Walk in Sydney towards the end of the race but faded to 6th,(also 8th in 20km Walk...)and Dion Russell also completed both 20km walk & 50km walk with excellent results see below. Deakes went on to win the 20km Walk and 50km Walk double at the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games, which also saw Jane Saville win the Womans 20km Walk to complete an Australian dominance of the Racewalking at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. Simon Baker's 3hr 43min to win the 1989 Barcelona World Cup 50km Walk, remains one of the best efforts by an Australian in the last 15 years, and followed his 3hr 44min effort at the Seoul Olympics in 1988 for 6th. see the VRWC International Representatives page.]

Korzeniowski AGAIN! the master, this time of the Sydney 2000 Olympic 50km walk, goes on to beat Massana from Spain again, who is seen leading the bunch here.
